The widely circulated e-mail claims to offer a look inside last week’s Navy SEAL rescue of Capt. Richard Phillips from Somali pirates.
The message, credited to retired Rear Adm. Lou Sarosdy, begins, “Having spoken to some SEAL pals here in Virginia Beach yesterday and asking why this thing dragged out for four days, I got the following…”
It goes on to criticize President Barack Obama for not authorizing the military to act more aggressively during the stand-off, which ended with snipers killing three Somali pirates. The e-mail claims that Obama rejected two proposed rescue plans and that Phillips was saved only after naval officers at the scene decided on their own to proceed.
There’s at least one problem. Sarosdy says he didn’t write it. And he doesn’t know if anything in it is true.
“I don’t know any SEALs,” said Sarosdy, 81, speaking by phone from his home in Pensacola, Fla. “I have no idea who transmitted that.”
Sarosdy said he received the e-mail from a friend – he thinks it was another retired military officer – a few days after the stand-off ended, he said. He thought it was interesting, so he forwarded it to a couple dozen other people.
The message has popped up on message boards across the political spectrum, for the Sean Hannity Show, Military Times and MSNBC.
A spokesman for the Joint Chiefs of Staff could not be reached for comment late Monday.
Cmdr. Greg Geisen, a spokesman for Naval Special Warfare, declined to comment. He noted that a wide range of bloggers are speculating about what happened. “Everybody’s talking about it,” Geisen said. “It’s the number one topic in the nation.”
Sarosdy graduated from the Naval Academy in 1951 and spent a career in naval aviation. He flew F-3H Demons and F-8 Crusaders off aircraft carriers, and rose to a two-star position as director of Naval Air Systems Command.
Sarosdy did two stints in Hampton Roads in the 1970s, and his son still lives in Virginia Beach, he said. He retired from the Navy in 1982.
He’s not quite sure how he ended up as a virtual expert on the pirate rescue.
“I passed it to a fairly limited number of guys,” he said. “I can’t take any credit.”

He is clearly no longer a threat.
Neither is Timothy McVeigh... refer back to your DHS talking points and try again.

CS: At this point you're splitting hairs. Your last response was something of a long winded "nunh-uh." You can be offended if you choose to be offended that is your right. But I don't think we should turn a blind eye to terrorism (essentially what you are suggesting) because it offends you. We could bicker that Poplawski doesn't match the characteristics in the DHS flier but your arguments are becoming increasingly twisted and ridiculous. All this chaff doesn't change the validity of the flier. As you must know by now the flier was a summary of part of a classified report. Perhaps the intelligence gathering methods (which civil rights groups) are part of what's classified. jkbrentYou're just trolling now so answering you is useless. However William Ayers' history and the deposition of his criminal charges are a matter of public record. Look them up for yourself. As for the crime prevention fliers, He is clearly no longer a threat.
Also wondering
Did either of the two DHS reports on left-right wing terrorists mention or make note of Obama's good buddy and best pal, William Ayres? You know, the guy that set off bombs in the Pentagon, and killed NYC Police Officers with another bomb? Uuuhhh Fletch???
Fletch
What about those other suspect organizations, you know.. Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Eagle Scouts, etc. They learn to start campfires and how to survive in the wilderness and who knows what other kind of right-wing extremist techniques. They even wear... uniforms!! And, there may be a few maybe many of them, that don't support The One. Or relish the idea of being tens of thousands in Federal debt before they even graduate high school. Some of them, ...gasp... might even own a Daisy BB gun. I sure hope DHS and Lord Obama's ACORN brown shirts are keeping an eye on those Chucky Monsters.
Actually, I DID read the
Actually, I DID read the report, which is why I take umbrage at your bringing Poplawski up. Specifically, the report mentions “(U) A prominent civil rights organization reported in 2006 that “large numbers of potentially violent neo-Nazis, skinheads, and other white supremacists are now learning the art of warfare in the [U.S.] armed forces.” The report doesn’t mention the “prominent civil rights organization,” which is curious. The report doesn’t say gun rights advocate AND white supremacist AND antigovernment AND anti-Obama AND distraught over economy AND prior military. It mentions each individually, which is why posters on this board have had a particular problem with is its specifying that returning military war veterans are likely recruits for right-wing extremism. As a returned vet myself, I don’t appreciate your associating Poplawski with my mates and me. As for your checklist… I own firearms and use them at work, I didn’t vote for Obama, I’m not happy about the economy and I’m in the military. I’m sure DHS is tracking my IP address right now…
jkbrent
Your reliably hysterical and hyperbolic interpretations are amusing. Keep them up. Military experience was one of several factors the DHS flier. I listed a few of them. Poplawski had them. He killed three cops. The DHS flier is accurate in that regard. Deny it till you're blue in the face but reality is what it is, even when it is at odds with your imaginary world.

"Ex Military-Check Minus"
Okay, I see now... so you don't even think they have to be a Veteran to be blood thirsty right wing murderer. Just even being around the military for a brief period is enough. Smooth Sherlock, real smooth.
CS Right Wing Extremist Check list
Richard Poplawski CS, you haven' read the report either. Here are some high points as the relate to Poplawski. BTW the rep[ort was issued on April 7, Poplawski murdered 3 cops on April 4.
