Posted to: Local Music Profile

Base of operations  Suffolk

Style  Christian rock

Bio

The 43-year-old singer, songwriter and guitarist, with a little bass and keyboard thrown in, released “Time to Rise” in early 2008. He began his solo career in 2003 and has released five EPs with original material.

Prior to ’03, Byrum was in several local rock bands: Apex, Gangway and Likkity Split. As a member of Gangway, he met Jeff Preziotti of Portsmouth. “Jeff was the nicest dude I ever met.”

Preziotti, who died of cancer early last year at age 40, became Byrum’s inspiration for changing to the Christian rock format, and “Time to Rise” is dedicated to his memory.

Byrum hopes to team up with two other Hampton Roads Christian bands – Hemotheory and Monument – for some summer touring, “There’s a huge event on Sept. 26 for youth drug rehab in Newport News that I’d like to get them to join me on.”

Original song lyric

“Time to Rise,” It’s time to rise, spread your wings and fly away/ kiss them all goodbye/ head onto your better place.

Quote

Recently I connected with the former bassist of Pillar (Michael “Kalel” Wittig), who has a side project called “Stars Go Dim.” I may go to Oklahoma; I’m looking at having one of the songs on “Time to Rise” remastered by Travis Wyrick, who works with P.O.D. and Pillar. That’s kind of exciting for me.
