A 25-year-old man has been arrested and charged in the hit-and-run crash that fatally injured a pedestrian Thursday night on Virginia Beach Boulevard, police said.

Brandon Wayne Meck of Virginia Beach was booked into the city jail this morning on charges of drunken driving and felony hit and run, according to jail records. He is charged with driving with a blood alcohol content greater than .20.

The legal limit to drive in Virginia is .08.

A police officer was behind a Nissan Xterra at the stop light on Virginia Beach Boulevard about 10:30 p.m. when the pedestrian illegally crossed at North Great Neck Road, police spokesman Jimmy Barnes said.

The officer saw the SUV strike the victim, and he immediately stopped to render aid, Barnes said. A witness followed the SUV and reported its license plate and direction to police, who pulled it over near Lynnhaven Parkway, Barnes said. The driver, Meck, was arrested.

The name of the victim, who died Friday morning at the hospital, was withheld pending notification of family. He was described as being in his 50s, and authorities were unsure of his address, Barnes said.

Police are still investigating, and additional charges could be filed.
