A body found floating in the water off a fishing pier in Newport News on Sunday has been identified as that of a missing North Carolina man, police said Thursday.
Officer Harold Eley, a Police Department spokesman, identified the man as Roger Shatner Young, 36, of the town of Engelhard in Hyde County, N.C.
Foul play is not suspected, Eley said.
Young went out fishing with a group of friends, who returned to shore on a boat. His friends reported Young missing on March 20, Eley said.
It was unclear what happened after they returned to shore, but at some point Young left the group, Eley said. They thought Young had made it to shore, Eley said, and did not realize he had fallen in the water.
Fishermen saw Young’s body floating just before 5 p.m. Sunday off a fishing pier near Sixth Street and Jefferson Avenue.
