Boys basketball: Norcom's Williams picks Air Force

Norcom’s DeShawn Williams, who helped lead the Greyhounds to the Eastern District regular-season and tournament crowns in boys basketball, has committed to the Air Force Academy.

Williams, a 6-foot-2 guard, averaged 19 points, four assists and three steals a game . He was the Eastern District Player of the Year and was second-team All-Tidewater.

“I chose Air Force from an academic standpoint; it’s like getting an Ivy League education,” said Williams, who has a 3.3 grade-point average and wants to major in communications. “I’m very grateful for this opportunity to play at the Air Force Academy.”

Williams also said he’s looking forward to testing his skills in the Mountain West Conference, which includes two teams that advanced to the NCAA tournament in Brigham Young and Utah.

“I’m going to be playing in a tough conference with schools like BYU, San Diego State and UNLV,” he said. “But I always knew I could play at that level.”

Williams chose Air Force over Western Carolina, Stony Brook, American and Quinnipiac. He is the second Norcom player to commit to a Division I basketball program. Teammate Darius Theus previously committed to Virginia Commonwealth .
