Chesapeake resident puts up a sign of determination

Posted to: News

CHESAPEAKE

Tommy Tise felt sick.

Somebody with muddy shoes pried open the back door of his South Norfolk house and stole two shotguns and a rifle and a case of watches. They took $1,000 cash and $800 in rolled-up coins and his 1964 Oscar Smith High School ring. They snatched some football cards he'd collected in boyhood and antique jewelry that belongs to his wife, Alma. They did it while the couple was away in Florida in February, thinking everything was just fine.

Tise called police, and they began an investigation.

Meanwhile, Tise got mad. To have to sit there and feel helpless and wonder why.

Two weeks passed. Then Tise got a 4-by-8 piece of plywood and some white paint and made a sign: "$500.00 reward for the arrest + conviction of the person who robbed this house."

Then his neighbor offered $200 extra, so he painted lines over the $500s and wrote $700s below them.

Tise put the sign in his front yard because even if he never gets his stuff back - and he expects he won't - his neighbors on Virginia Avenue and whoever else who drives by will know about it. And maybe the person who burglarized his house will see it, and realize that he didn't sit there and feel helpless for very long.

Taking vacations . . .

A pattern is developing here. When people go away for several days, they have a breakin. It seems homes are being watched more than we realize. I suggest that, until the economy improves, we go back to installing housesitters in our homes when we leave for vacation or business trips.

Community justice, forget the joke system.

If justice was served as it should be many of these instances would never happen. The thought of being beaten by the community far outweighs 3 hots and a cot, taxpayers money for training plus a free place to stay after serving 30% of the sentence while you are eased back into the society you defiled to begin with.
Most and I said most not all criminals had no concern for the victims feelings, the victims family and in some cases humanity in general so why do they deserve better treatment?

Broke Tax Payer

Once again, most Frederick supporters are very uninformed. Frederick was not asleep. He was not awaken by the officers... he said it himself in court. Please get your facts straight before you comment on things you don't know the facts on. There were more than 2 plants, as well. Premeditation was a factor in this case, otherwise he would have never been indicted by the Grand Jury for capital murder and murder 1.... so you get real.

Detective Shivers was doing his job, serving a legal search warrant, to someone who was breaking the law. And if you would shoot someone after they knocked repeatedly and announced themselves, then breached your door, you too should find yourself in jail.

Mr. Tise put up a reward... therefore he is trying to help the police catch the robber(s).

Such a shame

How is Mr. Tise "helping" the police "memyself"? He's stating his case just like Mr. Frederick's family was stating their's. Mr. Frederick didn't murder anybody (premeditation was never an issue in this case now was it?) He acted in self-defense. I'm a single woman. I own a gun. If someone woke me up by breaking down the door, I don't think I would've reacted by saying, "May I help you?"

Get real. This police officer was killed because the Ches. police thinks they're on COPS and wanted to be brave and macho. Too bad it cost a police officer's life. It is this issue that hasn't been resolved within the Ches. PD so I assume in the future there will be innocent civilians acused of murder when another "major drug bust" (with two marijuana plants) goes awry.

three more guns on the street

are unfortunate. He should be able to leave his home and not be robbed. I hope the sign helps get some results but ultimately I would like to see the shotguns and rifle off the streets... there are plenty out there already.

I agree

with memyselfandi! Thank you for saying it!

Please...

This is TWO completely different situations. Mr. Tise was robbed,... and he is trying to HELP the police in finding who took his things. Ryan Frederick killed a man... police officer or not, he killed a man. The sign of support for Frederick was completely in poor taste. No one died in this robbery... there isn't a grieving family who lost their husband, father and son, and a community hasn't been torn apart and the police villified for doing their jobs because of this robbery.

The only reason Frederick was found guilty of manslaughter and not murder is not because he's innocent... it's because of good lawyering.

On a happier note, I hope the robber(s) are found and Mr. Tise's things are returned... but I am sure after this article, his sign will be removed as well for violating code.

Good for him

This is a way for him to take some control of the situation. I do wonder though, since the sign is not secure to his lawn or to his porch, will he get charged with a building code violation like Ryan Fredrick's family did when they put a sign in their yard.

Retaliation

Good for you sir. I hope the thieves are caught and have to pay for this crime in some way other than jail time. All they learn there is how to be better thieves and thugs. To all you thieves and other thugs out there doing harm to others, "your day will come" and I hope to be there to watch it happen. The rest of us just want to live peacefully and safely without fear of you and your kind.

hmmm...

I would much rather have the police focusing on things like this than worrying about some plant that is less dangerous than aspirin or jaywalking.
