We welcome your opinion on public issues, in either of two ways. You can submit a letter to the editor for possible publication in the printed edition. The Virginian-Pilot welcomes letters to the editor on all topics, although concise letters (150 words or less) on public issues will receive priority. Letters may be edited for length, style and clarity and writers are limited to one published letter every month. Please add your name, city, street address and daytime telephone number for confirmation.

The other way is to comment on the published letters in this blog. In this online forum, you can comment as much as you want by using the comment box at the end of each entry.

the dog that barks loudest

DOES IT SURPRISE ANYONE in Virginia Beach that the City Council appeared to turn a deaf ear to those pleading for a new animal shelter ('Decrepit animal shelter must be replaced, residents urge council,' Hampton Roads, April 29)? After all, the poor stray dogs have no big developer backing them.

It's state law, Warren

Warren, under Virginia State Code counties and cities are REQUIRED to have or operate an animal shelter and in many cases, the animals are there to PROTECT people FROM dangerous or vicious animals.

It is also there to provide a "dumping" facility for humans to rid themselves of an animal they no longer want, a place to look for and reclaim a lost animal, take a found animal or adopt a new animal for their own enjoyment.

Animal shelters DO serve people Warren-and like it or not, they are a fact of life in our society.

Tax consumer vs tax payer

The letter is a bit facetious. Seems to imply that we give preference to developers and neglect dogs. And why not?

Building a dog house will require an expenditure of taxes forever. Support for a developer who creates jobs and increases our tax base earns the city income from taxes forever.

A developer benefits humans. A dog house benefits dogs.

Could it be that the writer can’t tell the difference, or, prefers dogs to humans?

What a great idea!

The developers could collectively provide a tax relief for their company, employ those struggling for a job position, and become the population's friend again and put a smile on every pet needing a little 'shelter' from the elements!
