Fire destroys house on Hatteras Island

An unoccupied oceanfront house in Avon was destroyed Tuesday by an early morning blaze, fire officials said.

The fire at the six-bedroom house, a vacation rental located on Ocean View Drive, was reported at about 2 a.m., said Dare County Fire Marshal Doug Remaley.

As a precautionary measure, an adjacent residence was evacuated, Remaley said.

No one was injured.

Assisted by Buxton, Frisco and Salvo volunteer fire departments, the Avon Volunteer Fire Department had the fire under control in an hour. It was about completely extinguished by 5 a.m., the fire marshal said.

Remaley said that the point of origin and the cause of the blaze have not been determined. So far, he said, there has been no evidence to indicate that it was not accidental.

“Anytime I have a fire at a property that no one has been in in a while,” he said, “it’s always a concern.”

The investigation is continuing, Remaley said.
