David Cahoon, a Great Bridge resident, is expected to run this year for Chesapeake sheriff, challenging his former boss and long-time incumbent John Newhart.
The election for the constitutional post is set for Nov. 3. Newhart, in his re-election bid, boast of 39 years of experience as the elected sheriff.
No one has formally filed with the city registrar’s office to challenge for the post. Cahoon, however, has launched a campaign Web site: Cahoonforsheriff.com.
“It is time that nepotism, favoritism, and the attitude of ‘because I said so’ are put to rest,’’ the site states.
Cahoon is a life-long resident of the city and attended Great Bridge High. He has earned an Associates Degree in Police Services from Tidewater Community College and worked in the sheriff’s office. In 2006, Cahoon accepted a position with the Virginia Department of Corrections

Sheriff Newhart
Sheriff Newhart is the longest running sheriff in country and he has been for a reason, HE is good at what HE does. Hello, HE is a politician and does the political work to support his department; getting deputies equal starting pay as other law enforcement in the city, equal equipment for them to use, better training, LEO retirement in addition to VRS retirement, EVAP, the list goes on....do the homework before you begin to throw stones at the man.
No clue
The reason Mr. Cahoon is running for Sheriff is not because he holds a grudge for Newhart, its because he wants to stop the corruption, the do as I say attitude, and to get rid of the good ole boy system, which I'm sure the people working for Newhart are sick of. All of the Sheriff's mentioned in these reviews have in someway disgraced their office in one way or the another. Newhart is no different, its time for the citizens of Chesapeake to take a stand and hold these people accountable for what they do, because they surely will hold you and I accountable. They play by two sets of rules, there's and ours. If any changes are to be made to the programs concerning the elderly, or senior citizens it will be to improve the quality of life. Look how many time Newhart has changed parties in order to gain the upper hand, to get is way no matter the cost to the city or his employees. One thing is for sure, the supplemental pay that the deputies are receiving, WILL NOT GO AWAY!! Mr. Cahoon is concerned, and will make a change.
Blind Allegiance
I guess I shouldn't be surprised for the adulation that some Chesapeake residents have for a sheriff that has hid his corruption and arrogance behind a facade of "good deeds." Perhaps the residents of Chesapeake are happy to pay for Newhart's vacation/extradition trips. I suppose that the common people are content with losing money in racial discrimination suits against Mr. Newhart. There is the natural course of events that cause people to forget his indictment on sex crimes in 1977. He certainly seems to be one Republican that would oppose term limits. I'm sure the two suspects that were gang raped in the jail while the philosophically trained leadership stood by doing nothing. That incident cost Chesapeake $90,000 in another lawsuit. I could go on. As for the elderly, those charities won't change. But I'm sure that won't stop the entrenched Newhart croonies from propagating lies about it. Truth: Newhart is corrupt and David Cahoon is a person of integrity.
Newhart is fine. I've had enough CHANGE for this year.
Even though the challenger has that prestigious associates degree from TCC, I'll stick with the Sheriff.
Just ask!
If anyone wonders if the way things are done by the Chesapeake Sheriff's Office needs to change, ask one of the over 1500 senior citizens who enjoyed a nice meal and free health screenings this week at the Senior Support Services Seminar. Or ask anyone who has received much needed help from the Elderly Victims Assistance Program, or a recipient of a holiday food basket at Christmas. But please don't ask a bitter former employee!
jamiegumm......
You're right, to a point. Waters was as crooked as could be. McCabe, did have law enforcement experince when he unseated Mapp. But, the person "running against" Sheriff Newhart is not even close to being prepard to be sheriff. Take it from me, being a deputy in no way prepares you to be sheriff. That's way deputies are deputies and the sheriff is a politican. Granted, one day Sheriff Newhart will either retire, he may even get ousted. But, this isn't the guy to do it.
Let's See.........
FBI National Academy Graduate, National Sheriff of the Year 1997, Past President Virginia Sheriff's Association, American Jail Association, American Correctional Association, First Citizen of Chesapeake, I could go on and on. Oh, by the way who has done more for Elderly & Indigent Victims of Crime than anyone and is truly committed to improving Chesapeake that's right Sheriff Newhart. The Challenger is not even in the same league!
sour grapes........
"accepted a position with DOC" because he wasn't reappointed when Sheriff Newhart was reelected. Souds to me like the ex-deputy holds a grudge.......
sour grapes
looks like sour grapes to me
It's about time...
someone challenged these entrenched officials. Only then will there be some transparency in hiring/firing practices and other items of interest. Remember McCabe unseated Mapp in Norfolk (oh what dirty laundry was finally aired). Then Watson unseated Waters in Portsmouth (talk about someone that routinely abused his authority). Waters had his own little fifedom there. Now it's time for Virginia Beach to clean house. Who knows what evil lies in the hearts of men!
