With nearly 300,000 Virginians out of work, every elected leader should be working tirelessly and together to help constituents endure the worst recession since the 1930s. Instead, on Wednesday, Virginia's Republican legislators wasted hours at the Capitol in obstructionism and showmanship.
By the end of the day, Republican lawmakers had voted to reject $125 million in federal aid for the unemployed, jeopardizing the financial stability and survival of families in every neighborhood of the commonwealth.
All Virginia had to do was make modest expansions in its benefits, now some of the most miserly in America. Gov. Timothy M. Kaine proposed two changes: Workers laid off from declining industries such as textile manufacturing would collect benefits longer while they received training. More idled part-time workers would be eligible for aid. Those changes would cost less than $20 million.
For that, Virginia would have received $125 million from Washington to provide expanded jobless benefits to hurting Virginians, money that those families would've turned right around and spent on the necessities of life.
Republicans, with nearly one voice, said no. The excuses they provided were both spurious and embarrassing.
GOP leaders contended the expanded benefits would cripple businesses with new taxes during an economic downturn. In actuality, businesses would not be affected until 2011, and the tax would peak at less than 2 cents per worker per day in 2012 before declining.
Even so, legislators could have rolled back the eligibility rules and that tax once the economy recovers. Senior Republicans baldly stated that they did not trust themselves or their colleagues to do so.
Which begs a simple and devastating question: If GOP leaders have no faith in their own ability to change laws to adapt to circumstances, why should Virginians?
Worse, the vote was a transparent attempt to mask a larger political agenda at the expense of struggling Virginians. Kaine now splits his time between the governor's mansion and his responsibilities as chairman of the Democratic National Committee. Many Republicans viewed this critical vote on unemployment benefits instead as a trivial opportunity to embarrass Kaine and President Barack Obama.
Sen. Ken Cuccinelli's attitude was all too clear when he complained that "our constituents who are now unemployed are being used by this administration to hold a gun to the head of this General Assembly with the assistance of the governor to force through a bad bill."
By thumbing their noses at a man because he has two jobs, Republicans like Cuccinelli showed an inexplicable disregard for the thousands of Virginians who have none at all.
Virginia's lawmakers are elected to show mercy to those in need, to show judgment in response to changing conditions, and to show leadership when faced with difficult and complex decisions. If they can't handle those responsibilities, voters this fall should look for leaders who can.

Federal Government attempting to change state policy
This is a clear case of the federal government attempting to change the policy of the states by bribery. I believe that if the Federal Government thinks that our state should be more liberal in the way we run our unemployment system then the Federal Government should take over the program by doing all the administering and funding of it themselves and relieve the state of all responsibility. Otherwise stay out of the states business in such matters. If they want to give money to the states it should be with no strings attached or don't give anything at all.
Debt
Did anyone notice that the Op Ed staff never mentions that this is debt as they continue to rant and rave about how awful the Republicans are? They always present a one sided far left liberal view with little to no criticism of the Democrats massive debt accumulation. One sided writing like this is leading to one sided readership.
Embarrass Gov. Kaine?
Rest assured, the GOP does not need to go to any extreme efforts to embarrass Governor Kaine, he has proved quite capable of being an embarrassment to the State with no help from them.
What is at stake here is the sovereignty of the State of Virginia. Federal dollars always come with strings attached, in this case, rewriting our laws on unemployment compensation to conform to the whims of central planners in Washington.
Virginians pay Federal taxes just like everyone else, and will be burdened by the colossal debts Obama is running up as well, so why should we have to submit to the dictates of his elitist chums to get back our own tax money?
Its about time someone said no to the expansion of the Federal government and the submission of the States to central authority. The GOP is to be congratulated. In time they may rise to be Libertarians :-)
The Right Thing to DO
Perhaps the GOP reps don't want to spend more money we don't have.
As that rep to the EU said, you can't spend your way out of a recession and you can borrow yourself out of debt . In hard times, people reduce their spending, pay down their debts, and sometimes even sell off a few things to make themselves solvent. If that is what is expected for the people, then we should expect the same from the govt. Such compassion from the govt as this strings-attached bait dangled before frightened people only makes them more dependent on the govt and puts our nation deeper in debt. Perhaps if the govt didn't reduce tax deductions for charitable contributions, there would be more money to help folks without the need to borrow it in the first place. Refusing this stimulous money was the responsible thing to do. We need leaders who are courageous enough to make these kind of tough, unpopular decisions just like many families are doing now when they cut off their cable TV and sell their IPods. Thankfully there are a few left.
The party of NO strikes again
The I want Obama to fail, by always saying NO, has struck again. It seems as if the Republicans want so badly to see Obama to fail that they are willing to take the country down with them. So much for their cries of "God , Country and the Flag". That has been replaced by the old mantra of Vietnam and Iraq, "we had to destroy the country to save it". So sad.
spurious and embarrassing
Those two words perfectly describe this editorial diatribe.
Lots of us are holding down 2 jobs in this economy, but the rest of us were not elected to the highest position in the Commonwealth. If Gov. Kaine truly cared about the people of Virginia he would have either declined the DNC position until after his term or stepped down as Governor.
Kaine does a dis-service to both.
