Veronica R. Williams, who teaches Algebra 1 at I.C. Norcom High School, was named the Portsmouth 2009 Teacher of the Year on Tuesday night.

Williams is the daughter of City Councilwoman Marlene Randall, formerly a teacher and administrator for the school division, and Vernon Randall, also a former school administrator for the division.

In a speech, Williams said, "I stand before you as merely a child of God." She added that she is a product of her parents and the Portsmouth schools. She graduated from Norcom in 1987.

Officials lauded Williams for respecting all students, regardless of their circumstances.

In a proclamation presented to her Tuesday night, Mayor James Holley declared April 21 to 28, 2009, as "Mrs. Veronica Randall Williams Week."

At the elementary level in the city, Beverly A. Bullock, a third-grade teacher at Westhaven Elementary, was awarded 2009 Elementary Teacher of the Year for the division.

Krista Lewellyn, a mathematics teacher at Churchland Middle, was named 2009 Middle School Teacher of the Year. Sean Glick, a trigonometry teacher at Churchland High, was named 2009 High School Teacher of the Year.

In all, 24 teachers in the division were named 2009 Teachers of the Year for their specific schools.
