Police have charged a 16-year-old Landstown High School sophomore with possessing a concealed weapon after he took a razor blade to school Tuesday.
The boy will remain in his parents' custody, Officer Margie Long, a police spokeswoman, said today.
This is the second Landstown student to be charged this week in separate incidents. On Tuesday, police arrested and charged a 17-year-old senior with 10 counts of manufacturing and possessing an explosive device and one count of manufacturing an explosive device for use in a terrorist act . They found 28 pipe bombs, Molotov cocktails and other devices in the student's home in the 2800 block of Saville Garden Way Monday.
Police said he may have been planning an attack against the school. According to Commonwealth's Attorney Harvey Bryant, the senior has shown a "fascination" with the Columbine High School shootings, in which two students killed 12 classmates and a teacher in Colorado on April 20, 1999.
The sophomore is a "known affiliate" of the senior, but police found no evidence of wrongdoing at his home when they searched it Wednesday.
When the bomb squad arrived at the single-family home in the 1100 block of Spindle Crossing, they didn't find weapons or explosives. They found lots of cats - about 60 or 70 live felines and 60 dead ones stowed in two freezers, said Long.
The student's mother, Lisa Ross, runs a cat rescue and is licensed to keep a large number of felines, said attorney Neil Bonney, a family spokesman.
Bonney said Ross' son was not involved in a suspected plot to bomb Landstown and disputed the number of cats in the house. About 30 live cats and six dead ones were inside, he said. The cats in the freezer died over the winter, and Ross was waiting for warmer weather to bury them, he said.
The situation with the sophomore student began around 2 p.m. Tuesday, when school officials reported smelling flammable liquid at the school, Long said. Fire officials responded and found a container with less than 2 ounces of flammable liquid in one of the school bathrooms.
From security tapes, officials identified a student who they suspect might have dumped the liquid. He was searched and a razor blade and a note containing "alarming, threatening" language was found, said Battalion Chief Tim Riley, a spokesman for the fire department.
Both students are juveniles, so neither has been identified.
Meanwhile, the Ross family planned to file a claim seeking reimbursement for damage it says police caused in the home, Bonney said. Investigators seized two computers and other electronic equipment from the house and left rooms in disarray, he said.
Outside the home Wednesday, Bonney showed reporters a crate filled with manila folders, each bearing a cat's name, such as "Munchkin" and "Rafa." Inside each were pages of health records and veterinary bills that Ross keeps to document the cats' care.
"She takes this very seriously," Bonney said. "This is not like some crazy person with a bunch of cats running around."

Great move
So, the paper doesn't ID the minor but then IDs the mother and the street in the same article. Anyone can easily find out who the kid is now.
possible reasons to go out-of-zone
Students can attend school out of zone for various reasons (with or without ulterior motives) such as a course of study or program not available at their home school (special education, NJROTC, Landstown Technology Academy, a specific course that can't be accommodated with distance learning), or for babysitting purposes (attending the school a relative is zoned for), or simply because a parent or other relative teaches there and requests it. Or, it could be done under the table. There are even instances of students in VB Public Schools that live in other cities, whose parents pay tuition to VBCPS.
What about the Parents
First of all---Virginia Beach Public School System has several schools that are called "academies" and students are allowed to go out of their school zone to attend these special programs. What in the world does this kid building bombs has to do with him/her being an athlete?????? It looks as if things may have been overlooked in these cases, as it is suggested it is done in the case of athletes. It was common knowledge that this kid was fascinated with guns and bombs-----HMMMM, was that somehow over looked and all of the children @ Landstown High School were sitting ducks????? I am sick and tired of the real issue not being addressed-----THE PARENTS!!!! How can your child build bombs and have an arsenal in your home and you the parent does not know. Oh I know---Johnny needs his privacy, and we can't invade his privacy by going in his room. That is the problem with this society, no one wants to take responsibility for their actions, or the lack there of. I commend the student who took a stand and told someone of this situation.
context
Serial/mass killers very often torture or kill animals before moving onto human victims. Perhaps that explains why the VP ran the article about cats in the freezer?
I am grateful!
I am very grateful that a student did the right thing! I have a child at Landstown, and what could have happened... We as parents need to control our children, and watch what they are doing!! I understand these women were single parents, but they need to take time and talk to their kids!!! I never had to worry about my school blowing up, or guns in school! What has happened to our society to allow our children to grow up, evil and non emotional!?!? Punish your kids if they do wrong, and be there! They don’t need a FRIEND they need PARENTS and control! Thank you to the brave student who turned the would be killer in!!!
Real story
The real story is the kid who turned in the pipe bomb maker. He or she should be given a medal and a huge reward. If cash would make these kids turn in their plotting peers, lives would be saved. Bravo to the Hero of Landtown High, every kid in that school and their parents should be grateful to him or her.
Elementary, my dear Watson..
"How does a child store twenty-something pipebombs and m-cocktails in a 1,300 sq. ft. townhouse and his parent(s) do not notice it?"
They were cleverly hidden under a pile of dead cats.
Good call Russ
It's common practice to 'bend' the rules on all kinds of things for Jocks. It's just a part of our culture.
Landstown is one of many
Landstown is one of many academies in the city of VIrginia Beach. Students from all over Virginia Beach can apply to attend there.
Maybe he was an athlete.
Maybe he was an athlete. Thats seems to be SOP for them
"Why does a student that lives just down the road from Bayside HS, that has to drive past Kempsville HS, and is closer to Princess Ann HS, Salem HS and even Green Run HS at Landstown HS?"
