Lawyer indicted on embezzlement charges in Norfolk

NORFOLK

A lawyer has been indicted on eight felony embezzlement charges.

Erick A. Bowman, 40, posted a $5,000 bond after his arrest last week. He is accused of stealing money from July 2003 through June 2007 from his employers at the law firm of Kalfus & Nachman, which has offices in Norfolk and Newport News.

Bowman is licensed to practice law in Kentucky and worked on Social Security matters.

Jon Babineau, Bowman's lawyer, said his client is a well-regarded attorney who is embroiled in a dispute with his former employers. Bowman sought an injunction against Kalfus & Nachman after he stopped working there in May 2008, according to Circuit Court records. Bowman sought access to his clients' files to notify them that he had left the firm, according to his complaint, and he accused Kalfus & Nachman of trying to steal his clients.

A judge ordered in September that Bowman be permitted to view some of the files, and the lawsuit was later withdrawn.

Franklin Swartz, a lawyer who represents Kalfus & Nachman, said Thursday that the indictments have nothing to do with the civil case.
