The two men who were fatally shot by Portsmouth police after police say they tried to arrest them Thursday night were both convicted felons, and one was a fugitive, according to court papers.
Demetrius D. Edens, 28, of Chesapeake, was wanted for violating probation, according to Chesapeake Circuit Court documents.
Police say Edens drove a 2009 Chevrolet into the Portsmouth officers' cars and struck an officer with the car when they tried to arrest him and 25-year-old Darren S. Wilson during a drug investigation, prompting police to shoot the two men.
Both men died from their gunshot wounds.
The incident took place in the 3800 block of Schooner Trail in Chesapeake around 11:25 p.m. Thursday. Police have not said how the investigation took Portsmouth police to Chesapeake.
One officer was injured when Edens struck him with his car. He was treated at the hospital and released, police said. His name was not released.
In 2005, Edens was sentenced to five years in prison for child abuse and neglect. He was on probation indefinitely after part of the sentence was suspended, according to court documents.
Wilson, who was a passenger in the Chevrolet, also had a criminal record. He had been convicted of obstruction of justice, possession with intent to distribute cocaine, possession of marijuana, driving with a suspended license and failure to appear in court, according to court documents.
When police searched the Chevrolet, they found 6 ounces of cocaine, they said.
Officer Dorienne Boykin, a spokeswoman for Chesapeake police, said she could not confirm the men's criminal records. No additional information was available Saturday morning, she said.
This was the third fatal shooting this year by Portsmouth police. Two officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative assignment, said police Chief Edward G. Hargis. Police have not released their names.
Portsmouth police will conduct an administrative investigation while Chesapeake police investigate the shooting, Hargis said.
