I-64 in Chesapeake open after hours closed for crashes

Posted to: Chesapeake News Traffic - Transportation

CHESAPEAKE

Multiple crashes during rush hour along Interstate 64 blocked traffic for several hours tonight.

The eastbound lanes near Deep Creek and the High Rise Bridge re-opened to traffic at about 9:15 p.m.

Shortly before 6:30 p.m., a crash involving nearly a dozen vehicles was reported near mile marker 295 in Chesapeake, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Traffic backups were about 2 miles long;  the crashes took several tow trucks to clear all of the wrecked vehicles.

A few minutes later, VDOT said an overturned tractor-trailer was blocking all lanes of traffic about a mile behind the first set of crashes on I-64 east.

Virginia State Police said they were called to 21 different crashes in that area tonight. There were no reports of serious injuries or property damages.

No additional details were available and it was unclear if the weather played a role in any of the crashes.

Traffic on I-64 east was being diverted to Interstate 464 north, then to the Military Highway South exit and back to I-64 east.

At 8:30 p.m., much of the traffic was still snarled in the area as crews continued to try to clean up the crashed vehicles.

Fact: Norfolk's (Virginia Beach's?) URBAN light rail would do nothing for interstate and suburban driving, especially in Chesapeake.

Next ludicrous statement...

Fact.

Fact: light rail is safer than driving

I was eastbound...

At the time of this incident, I was eastbound on 64, just about to get off the Deep Creek exit. I was so busy watching out for my own safety (due to arrogant drivers in big trucks and SUV's who were passing me when the max safe speed limit was 40) that I didn't see what was going on WB. Most of us slowed and were careful, but there are always those who think they can drive any speed. The worst thing for the eastbound (well, the direction is really west) travelers was limited visibility not only due to sheets of rain coming down but also the sun was out full force creating extreme glare. It was a strange sight for sure. I then saw people running on foot across lanes on the westbound side and then noticed the traffic back up. I hope everyone is OK.

Really VDOT?? REALLY?!?!

Even after one major interstate is closed in the area, VDOT in their brilliance decides they need to go ahead with closing the left lane of the west-bound tube of the Downtown Tunnel for "road work". So now after spending an hour and a half on top of a bridge with no way off, I enjoyed another 20 minutes waiting with the rest of the poor souls to get through the Downtown Tunnel, just so a guy can walk through looking up and around. VDOT, it couldn't possibly have waited until the late night hours? Pull it together guys...

Yup

Who says we need red light cameras, lights on when it can be hard for others to see you, laws against driving while on a cell phone, and so forth? I drove through that area not too long before this incident and the rain was incredible. Even more incredible, however, was the amount of people driving with NO lights and flying down the highway. Well, I hope everyone is ok but it seems as though Darwinism played its hand here. Think progressively people!

Wow

I write this from the High Rise with my legs hanging out the window, as the guys infront of me exchange insurance information. Behind me in the westbound lanes there's an ambulance stopped for someone who wasn't as lucky as the 2 infront of me; and all stemming from another accident miles ahead. During this I can only try to keep the glare from the sun out of my eyes and realize that it's not even raining any longer. So to the rest of Hampton Roads, please pay better attention and keep your distances! Thanks! :-)
