N.C. bill opposing proposed OLF passes House

Posted to: Military News North Carolina

RALEIGH, N.C.

A Pasquotank County lawmaker says North Carolina could have more authority over what goes on at a Navy practice landing field if his bill becomes law.

The House unanimously agreed Thursday to decline to give the federal government permission to acquire land in some areas of the state for a proposed outlying landing field.

The Navy wants the field in North Carolina or Virginia so jets can practice carrier takeoffs and landings. Gates and Camden counties are among the five proposed sites.

Rep. Bill Owens of Pasquotank County said the bill can't prevent the federal government from taking land and building the field despite local opposition. But he said it could give the state more influence over what is regulated or taxed there.

The bill now goes to the state Senate.

How about?

How about this......the OLF should be adjoining Oceana or Fentress. The Navy could control 30,000
acres around Oceana or Fentress or even both and build 2 OLFs right there. Turn out the lights at
the malls and practice all night.

In response to a previous

In response to a previous blogger......the proposed sites are adjacent to Virginia Beach and Chesapeake. Particularly Camden County.

Thanks for changing the headline...

North Carolina government

is wasting time on legislation that admittedly is ineffective against the federal responsibility of providing for national defense. I would suggest the NC Legislators concentrate on the disasterous budget that is in play. Then again, they can just build a pier and I guess that will fix all our woes.

No OLF in northeastern NC

It is great that NC representatives and senators are representing the people. This bill sends a strong message to the Navy. If an OLF is really needed, it must go to a county that already has a military presence, not a rural county. The prefect place for an OLF is adjacent to Oceana or Fentress.

Barring OLF?

"Barring" the OLF? There is nothing in the bill (or within NC's power)barring the OLF. The headline is both misleading and sensationalist. Once again, poor journalism at its best. Slow news day?
