CHEYENNE SHASKY had never lived in a house before, so she wanted it to be somewhere special when her family bought its first home.

Shasky and her husband, Ronn, who are both active-duty Navy, moved into Chesapeake 's Ships Landing community nine days before Christmas.

"I grew up in apartments," said Shasky, who is expecting their fourth child. "We have a pretty large family and needed a big home."

After renting a townhouse in Virginia Beach for the past three years, the Shaskys decided it was time to invest. Ships Landing, a quaint Deep Creek community developed by Hearndon Ships Landing LLC, caught their eye.

The neighborhood is near a wetlands preservation area, which many of the homes back to. Construction started in spring 2007.

Built by Hearndon Construction, many of the 47 homes are in cul-de-sacs and have a minimum of one-third acre lots. That was important to Shasky, who wanted outdoor space for her children to play.

"We went from 1,500 square feet to 2,700 of living space and have a nice fenced yard," Shasky, 28, said. "There's plenty of room for the kids and our dog."

Each of the models - The Schooner, The Paddle Wheel, The River Boat and The Flagship - has two stories, four-bedrooms, 2-1/2 baths and a two-car garage.

The Shaskys selected The Riverboat.

With the optional sunroom, they now have 2,700 feet of space.

Husband Ronn was sold on the arched entryway even before setting foot in the model.

"Our neighbors are friendly, and it was easy from beginning to end to work with the builder," Shasky said.

Sherry Maser, site agent with Rose & Womble Realty, said more than 50 percent of the community's purchasers have been VA buyers.

Only eight of the neighborhood's homes remain unsold.

"The military presence in Hampton Roads has had a big impact on Ships Landing," she added.

"We've also seen an increase in first-time homebuyers because of the $8,000 tax-credit incentive."
