New motorcycle safety course opened at Oceana

Posted to: Military Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH

A new motorcycle safety course at Oceana Naval Air Station will allow sailors to get the instruction they need to fulfill a Navy requirement.

The course, the first of its kind for the base, was opened Tuesday with a ribbon-cutting and its first class for riders of sport cycles. It also is open to Marines.

Because of a high number of motorcycle-related deaths among sailors, the Navy requires them to have training and to wear protective gear, even when they are not on duty or on a military base, officials said.

Classes also will be offered for new riders and people who already have experience. To sign up for a class, go to www.navymotorcyclerider.com or call (757) 433-2692.
