Newport News police have charged a part-time sports clerk at The Virginian-Pilot with assaulting a woman at a restaurant on Wednesday, police said.

Jason Scott Kidd, 30, of the first block of Tucker Lane in Newport News, was charged with malicious wounding and misdemeanor assault and battery.

Kidd is accused of hitting a female acquaintance in the face while holding an object in his hand about 11:20 p.m. at Plaza Azteca, 12099 Jefferson Ave., police said. The woman was taken to a hospital for treatment.

When a second woman tried to prevent Kidd from leaving the restaurant before police arrived he knocked her to the ground, police said.

Kidd was treated at a hospital for an injury to his hand and released.

He was being held in the Newport News jail on Saturday with no bond allowed, a jail spokeswoman said.
