The Merrimac District (Portsmouth/Chesapeake) of the Boy Scouts of America had its annual adult recognition dinner March 28.

Several leaders from Troop/Pack 259 were given awards in recognition of their efforts in 2008. Warren Goodman was given the District Award of Merit and Ted Miller was named Cubmaster of the Year.

Jimmy Stuart, Toby Peterson and Bob Zongolowicz received a special service award recognizing their efforts to restore the camping facilities at Sleepy Hole Park including completely refurbishing the restroom facilities (hence the “Golden Plunger Award”).

Mike Qualls was named adult “Scouter of the year 2008” for his direct service and leadership given to Troop 259. In particular, Qualls was cited for his ability to communicate with and provide a role model for today’s youth on the character expected of them to become leading members of society.

Troop 259 is sponsored by St. Therese Catholic Church on Portsmouth Boulevard. Its 40-plus Scouts are from Chesapeake, Portsmouth and Suffolk.
