RICHMOND
The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services says it's awarded $123,565 in block grants to seven projects designed to make specialty crops more profitable.
The agency said Tuesday the recipients include Virginia Tech Eastern Shore for new fertilizer application practices for fresh tomato production and the Virginia Association of Biological Farming for organic control of powdery mildew in winter squash.
Also getting money are the Virginia Vineyards Association, Eastern Mennonite University, Virginia Tech, the Southwest Virginia Agricultural Research and Extension Center, and the Southside Beekeepers Association.
Commissioner Todd Haymore says the projects will help keep agriculture the commonwealth's largest industry.
