Beach teen's friends: Shooter may have wanted necklace

Posted to: Crime News Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH

It's been nearly a week since 18-year-old Isiah Jones was shot down in the Lynnhaven Crossing Shopping Center, yet questions remain about who killed him and why.

Police are still investigating and are not releasing any information on leads or suspects, said Officer Adam Bernstein, a police spokesman. But the teen's friends say the shooter may have been after Jones' signature accessory - a silver and diamond cross on a chain.

Jones, a senior at Cox High School and Fame All Stars cheerleader, was waiting for his girlfriend outside The Jumpin' Monkey children's play area shortly after 8 p.m. Friday when the shooting occurred. He collapsed near his vehicle and died at the scene.

His friends all tell the same story: Someone approached his vehicle, asked for his chain and then shot him.

"Isiah snatched it off and handed it to him," but the shooter shot him anyway, said Melvin Farland Jr., a Fame All Stars coach and co-owner. "It was a senseless killing."

Police would not say whether the necklace had been recovered.

Andrea Cassevah, another co-owner, said Jones' girlfriend, who also cheers on the team, left work at The Jumpin' Monkey and found Jones gasping for air outside. She tried to revive him but was unsuccessful, Cassevah said.

"We drove up to The Jumpin' Monkey to check on him," she said. "He was just lying there, and it was just unbelievable."

Friends and family poured into the Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home on North Great Neck Road on Wednesday evening to remember Jones.

"He was very outgoing and very friendly," said Fame All Stars cheerleader Emily Rockwell, 20. "He was an excellent athlete and just a wonderful, wonderful cheerleader."

"Isiah was definitely his own spirit," Cassevah said. "He was always himself, and he was very spunky and always smiling whenever I saw him."

While only an average student, Jones was a "very intelligent young man," Farland said.

"He was preparing to graduate this year, and he was talking a lot about his future," he said. Jones had mentioned trying out for college cheerleading and wanted to go into computers, he said.

When the Fame All Stars compete in the World Cheerleading Championships in Orlando, Fla., later this month, they'll be short one of their strongest tumblers and most spirited leaders, coaches said. They'll wear black ribbons on their shoes and in their hair.

"They decided they would still go because he would want them to," Cassevah said. "Now they're just trying to figure out how to push through without him... Winning is irrelevant at this point. It's all about staying together as a team and overcoming the pain."

Jones' funeral service is planned for 1 p.m. today at Wave Church on North Great Neck Road. Jones' parents declined to comment until after the funeral.

Whoever did this didn't just hurt one person, said Stephanie Dixon, a 17-year-old Fame All Stars cheerleader who attended Jones' service Wednesday.

"They don't understand that it affects everything that he left behind - his mother, his girlfriend, his team, his family. It's hurting us," she said. "It's just unfair."

First and foremost my

First and foremost my thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends, and everyone effected by this awful situation.

With that said, i have been reading about this story and i also work with someone who had the pleasure of knowing this young man, and i am disgusted about this whole tragedy.....

Quesions

Somehow I believe that not all of the facts are being given in this case, everybody knows what happened but not who is involved or what they looked like. Prior drug issues, maybe they were current and ongoing or perhaps not. Overall, an unfortunate happening and a shame that his employer was listed as the JM, obviously not being truthful.

RE:

I agree with you bellaura, the police only seem to care about generating revenue by ticketing minor traffic incidences rather than actual "patrolling"

As for what you're saying, sandyg11698, while I agree that its stupid that you can buy a gun without a background check in VA at the MANY gun shows they have in Va Beach, anyone with a criminal mindset isn't going to care about even going to a gun show when one can easily be had on the black market; and cheaper at that.

What?????

Someone approached his vehicle, asked for his chain and then shot him.
"Isiah snatched it off and handed it to him," but the shooter shot him anyway, said Melvin Farland Jr.,

The necklace was placed on Jones' body at a wake Wednesday, said friend Marcus Rice, 32.

(ok, confused, Would this be the same necklace/chain that was given to the shooter?? So the "robber/shooter" forgot to get what he was "robbing" him for... Or maybe this wasnt over a necklace afterall...???)

unbelievable police

I am just amazed that we live RIGHT DOWN THE STREET from this shopping center----- with 2 small children. I am disgusted that having to endure the police who stock drivers down our street for speed that they can't direct their attention to the hoodlums and scum who loiter the mall area in obvious daylight into the night!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What in God's name is a crime like this being able to take place in front of a children's play place? There is definitely something wrong with the system when the focus is more on catching drivers going over 25 than monitoring these areas. It doesn't take a genius to see that this area is decreasing in safety when you take into account the neighborhoods surrounding this area and all that is moving into it.

senseless acts of violence

Guns in the hands of the young person who did this? How does that happen? Oh wait---VA is still one of those states where you can walk in a gun show and buy anything without any one checking much. Now we have another pretty decent kid paying for the rights of morons who insist on having lots of weapons in the hands of other morons.

Much Prayer

I am praying to the dear Lord to help us unite in prayer and community activism. Prayer changes things, and we must be vigilant in working with our law enforcement officers. We outnumber the officers; therefore, we have got to initiate taking back our communities. Wake up. Our own children (sons, daughters, nephews, nieces) are in jeopardy. How many more have to die before we feel the sense of urgency? I am praying, but I want to "collectively" do more, something.

The Difference Between Right And Wrong

Some people just don't understand the difference between right and wrong, or just don't care. Mental flaws. No problem with a basic parenting test then. Right? Teach parenting fundamentals at 10 yrs old so their ready by the time they have their first baby at 14 or 15...right?

to: iqdou

Your question is just the problem. The parents of these children AREN'T raising their kids. They aren't teaching them right from wrong because they themselves don't know the difference. If you're asking such a naive question it would probably kill you to see some of the environments a lot of our youth today are "raised" in. You think it's bad now....wait 5...10...years. I weep for the future.

from this article

"His friends all tell the same story: Someone approached his vehicle, asked for his chain and then shot him."

So -- someone saw who did this. Why is there not either a physical description or information on what the MURDERER was wearing so someone who knows this cretin might recognize him and help catch him???
