#1 Cox 3, #3 Ocean Lakes 1
Cox took control of the Beach District race with a surprisingly lopsided 3-1 victory Tuesday at Ocean Lakes.
Both teams entered the match unbeaten in league play.
“It was a great team effort and a wonderful job by our defense,” Cox coach Michele Clark said. “We had a lot of possession, but there was a lot of back and forth.
“Ocean Lakes has some very special players and we were able to hold them off.”
Cox (5-0 in the Beach, 8-0-2 overall) got off to a quick start when Emory Camper scored on an assist from Charley Martin nine minutes into the match. Chloe Russell – the Falcons’ 2008 All-Beach, All-Eastern Region and All-State selection – then notched what would turn out to be the eventual match winner with five minutes left in the first half.
Camper made it 3-0 13 minutes into the second half when she finished a one-on-one breakaway.
“That was big in what was a huge game for us,” Clark said. “This doesn’t win the district, but it was important because everybody else has at least one loss."
Ocean Lakes (5-1, 7-3-2) scored with eight minutes left as Monica Stimmel found the back of the net.
