U.S. Rep. Nye gearing up for re-election battle

Posted to: News Norfolk Politics

WASHINGTON

U.S. Rep. Glenn Nye, D-Norfolk, whose election last fall in what had been considered a safely Republican district drew national attention, is already gearing up for a tough re-election battle.

A Nye filing today with the Federal Election Commission indicates that he raised more than $380,000 during the first three months of the year and has just over $357,000 in his campaign account. About 46 percent of Nye’s funds came from political action groups. More than 90 percent of his $205,385 in individual contributions came from Virginians.

Nye’s fundraising puts him ahead of the pace established by his predecessor, Republican Thelma Drake, as she prepared for last year’s campaign in early 2007. Drake raised $226,724 in the first three months of 2007 and had $190,405 on hand at the end of that period.

Drake ended up outspending Nye in last fall’s face but fell short at the polls as a strong Democratic turnout propelled the newcomer into office. Drake has not announced whether she will attempt a comeback next year, but she filed a financial report indicating that she is not currently raising campaign funds.

It is clear from the comments that the Republican Right (RR) still harps their party line and does not look at the facts. The reality is that Nye has joined with the fiscally conservative Blue Dog Democratic caucus and did not vote for the stimulus bill that was passed by the House. Nye has also taken a fiscally conservative position on other bills.

Whatever. The fact remains that Nye has voted with his party over 90% of the time. Your other ugly potshots comments about Drake, who has nothing to do with Glen Nye's record, pretty much took any of your credibility away.

The comment that the “extreme deregulation of financial institutions started under Clinton” is only true because the Graham-Leach-Blyley Act was passed at the end of the Congressional session in 1999. Republican Phil Graham slipped in the deregulatory parts into the act at the last minute after it had been gone through in committee so that nobody had a chance to read it. Their financial lobbyists had gorged Phil Graham and the rest of the Republicans (and probably Democrats) in millions of dollars in lobbying funds.

Thelma Drake was the one that rubber stamped whatever her Republican handlers told her to do. Nye is clearly more educatated, knowledgable, and capable; Nye has a college degree from George Washington U while Drake has a high school equivalency certificate because she got knocked up in high school. Drake put in h

It's really of no consequence who our President is. Same goes for the Supreme Court members, IF we get the Congress right.
--------------------------

I would tend to agree except that it was President Obama personally who completely delegated the job of writing the spending bills to Pelosi and Reid. If Obama had taken more control of the process, maybe it would not have gotten so out of control. So I do think the President is (or can be) consequential. In the end, though, your point is well taken.

Hey PorkFatRules

That's a good link.

Here's what it also says:
"Voting with Party-
Glenn Nye has voted with a majority of his Democratic colleagues 90.0% of the time during the current Congress."

Thanks!

porkfat

Thanks for the link, which shows that HR 1, American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (stimulus bill), passed the house on 1/28/09 with a YES vote by Rep Glenn Nye (vote 46, if you want to double check your information).

He's only got a 90% party-line voting record...not bad.

Once again

It's really of no consequence who our President is. Same goes for the Supreme Court members, IF we get the Congress right.

Congress has the wherewithall by the Constitution to fix every mess in this country (just as they have been responsible for making all the messes; either directly or through shirking their responsibilities.)

So let's concentrate on getting this one Branch doing right by the Constitution and we'll ALL be better off.

Wow!

It's amazing how some of you (pierreg18059, Bob Farinelli, Mark Burns, CB, ricke69229, cowpower, and justanotheruser) know so much about things you truly know so little about! Umm, Nye voted against the stimulus bill for the very reasons you recklessly, rabidly and wrongly accuse him of voting for the stimulus package. Just click the “liberal mainstream media” website below and check THE facts, not your facts. http://projects.washingtonpost.com/congress/members/n000183/key-votes/

And GettingItRight, you want more than 750 words to express your views? It's really not necessary unless you have some civil, reasoned and marginally attainable solution rather than your "kneecap" de jour. Hey, did I see you on You Tube in a wig or was it a pig headed "hat" at the tea baggers rally yesterday? Nooooooooo, you were chucking pork rinds at Webb's office! BAM! Porkfat Rules!!!

our chance (cont'd)

By the way, the Constitution spells out the powers & responsibilities of our President, too.

Our chance

OK folks, here's our opportunity to get away from the partisanship & do what's right to get our country headed in the right direction.
For the record, I'm extremely disappointed in BOTH Parties. Neither do much in accord w/ our Constitution; they view us citizens as ignorant "subjects"; & very few have a clue on how to manage money.
Rep. Nye, like both of our esteemed Senators (little joke there) HAS mostly been a rubber stamp for the present Administration & should be taken to task for it (did YOU call/e mail/write his office?)
However, to be honest, he DID vote against the recent budget (could it have been merely a tactic to throw us off? Possibly.) But, to show we're more than partisan hacks ourselves, we must recognize & commend him when he does the right thing. (Again, how many have contacted his office for this purpose?)
Also, it's easy to know if our Senators & Congressmen are doing the right or wrong thing. We don't need talking heads, newscasters, Virginian Pilot editors, etc. for this purpose. We merely need to familiarize ourselves with our Constitution. In it we will find ALL the things our elected officials are authorized to do. (BTW, that goe

I'm encouraged

It seems more and more different voices are being heard at this site - not the same old anti-anything geezers who have dominated these boards.

Obama supporters

OK, it's natural to want to support the guy you voted for if he wins. I'm the same way.

But is there an Obama supporter here who can defend a stimulus bill that appears so brazenly pork-filled, and most of which may not kick in for years?

And please explain to me the logic that when we overspend the public's money and get us into deficit with Bush, the answer to the problem is to spend dramatically MORE, to the tune of a trillion dollars?

Are there any Obama supporters here who truly expected this from the man you voted for a few short months ago?

Is there an Obama supporter here who regrets their vote and will admit it?

Please tell me there is.

obama also a pawn

If the economy is the issue in the next election the results of recent actions will determine results of the election. Obama didn't read the stimulus bill before he signed it any more than his partisans read it before they voted on it.

If I failed to do my job to that degree I'd be fired. But I'm not a politician.

OBAMA

Obama brings to the table a well spoken, calm demeanor, likeable guy, who sadly will ultimately fail. He is still really popular because he is a minority. Howard Stern's show went through the streets of Brooklyn and spoke with African Americans about who they were voting for. They gave John McCain positions on topics but said they were Obama's and many people didn't even know. One lady was asked if she agreed with Sarah Palin being Obama's running mate and she replied that she liked her. This is a perfect example as to how Obama was elected. Sadly people voted on race and not the issues at hand. Since Obama is already the President, there is nothing to do now but hope we do not become a socialist nation.

His record

His name is on the largest spending bill in U.S. history (760 Billion $ "stimulus") and he will have to answer to voters in Hampton Roads next year. He can start by explaining how we will pay China back for all of this debt.

Nye is not a rubber stamp

In fact, if you check his voting record, he has not voted the party line on many spending bills. I would prefer a more progressive person in Congress but he is so much better than Drake.

Missing The Point

As some one all ready stated, only been in office for three months and fund raising. I really think that our nation is in a dark place when you have to start fund raising before you even get your feet wet. This is not a right or left problem, it is a problem that affects everyone.
How can anyone do there job while worrying about raising money to keep your job. We all know what money can buy in Washington. I believe it is called votes. All party's are guilty of it. The day to day person on the street does not have a say in the groverment. If you are the rich and the powerful you can buy influance.
I think that it is time for the people to insist on free elections. The airways are owned by the groverment and each person should be allowed the same amount of ad time for each election. Of course I am not any where close to having the compleate answer to the problem but until the problem is sloved we are never going to get a groverment that works for the people that elected it.
Look at the past history of those new congressmen and what choice do thay have but to follow the leader of there party. If thay don't then the money will dry up and someone else from there party will be se

Nye is a typical Democrat

I heard him speak once and he seems like a likeable sort of guy. However from what I have seen in regards to Nye's voting record so far he pretty much votes the Democrat line. I suspect that like most politician he owes a lot to the party that put him in office. He voted for the stimulus package without hesitation and is for the Voter Intimidation Bill which will give the unions unpresidented power. He backs up Obama's attack on our nations achievers and supports the present government school monopoly on education. Furthermore, like most politicians (Republicans Included) in regards to national defense he is mostly concerned about his district's concern with little regard for the whole nation and believes that he is better qualified than Admirals and Generals to decide where our carriers should be stationed. To his credit he seems to be interested in helping out veterans when they return to the States. Unfortunately, I doubt that the Republicans will come up with anyone who can seriously challenge him in 2010. So, in a mostly conservative district he will most likely escape any accountablity; we are probably going to have him as our representative for a while.

Wake Up!

The extreme deregulation of financial institutions started under Clinton and continued under Bush. When will we stop shaking our fists across the aisles and roll up our sleeves and dig out the country from all the bull-mess both parties have dumped on us? Hey, but let's forget common ground, keep fighting and keep letting the petting zoo poop all over us. What one party can even represent the complexity of one person and their overall worldview? Yet we continue to express blind loyalty, pointing the finger and glossing over the mistakes of the leaders we support.

From a Moderate to the Extremists.

Mr. Nye won partially because of Drake's unpopularity with moderates. Mr. Nye seems to be leaning too far to the Left and risks losing the moderate vote come next election. Remember; it's the moderates who decide most elections. The extreme left and right voters vote lockstep with their party of choice.

One term for Mr. feel good

Did Nye blindly vote for Oanamahammyslammers Pork Bill with out reading it? Like Webb and Warner he’s one term and done..
