House Republican leaders Thursday fired back at Democrats who have accused them of being callous for rejecting $125 million in federal stimulus money that would extend unemployment benefits to more Virginians.
Flanked by business owners who support their stance, House Speaker William Howell, R-Stafford County, and Del. Sam Nixon, R-Chesterfield County, said GOP legislators approved benefits for idled workers but refused the $125 million because it would stall Virginia's recovery from the recession.
The changes offered by Gov. Timothy M. Kaine "would have led to higher taxes on every job in Virginia, making new job creation significantly more difficult," Howell said at a news conference in the state Capitol.
To get the stimulus money, Virginia must expand its unemployment system to cover certain jobless workers not currently eligible for benefits. Kaine wants to add part-time workers and those in career training programs to quality for the stimulus dollars. Virginia's current system provides benefits only to eligible individuals who were full-time workers.
Expanding the pool of eligible workers has a cost: Employers would pay about $4.56 more per worker each year in unemployment insurance costs when the $125 million was spent - unless the expansion is repealed later by the General Assembly.
The annual increase would be added to ballooning unemployment fees paid to the state by employers. The present annual average cost of $95 per worker is projected to more than double to $201 by 2011, according to the Virginia Employment Commission.
Republicans say those costs will discourage businesses from adding jobs and delay people's return to the work force.
Democrats have hounded Republicans over their rejection of the $125 million since the House defeated the plan this month and are expected to make it an issue in the fall elections.
Insisting that the proposed unemployment expansion is modest and could be reversed when the economy recovers, Democrats continued their attack in a Thursday afternoon conference phone call just hours after the Republican's event. House Minority Leader Ward Armstrong, D-Henry County, said GOP legislators ignored the needs of working people and businesses by refusing the stimulus money.
Although Republican legislators turned down the $125 million expanding some benefits, they were among those who voted to accept up to $65 million in stimulus funds for other unemployment-related programs.
Lawmakers approved extending unemployment benefits another 13 weeks, bringing the maximum total coverage period to 59 weeks, and voted to lower health insurance costs for laid-off workers.

re: gertz (cont'd)
Sorry, the 750 letter max has conspired against completing my earlier answer.
Anyway, as to illegals: In no way do I feel they're to blame for the economy. Many are, however, doing jobs that unemployed Americans could now be doing, but my reason for mention was to illustrate how there is NO difference between Obama & Bush on that (& many other) issues.
Sorry Obama defenders, but this guy is as beholden to big business as any big politician has ever been; he just caters to the INTERNATIONAL vice domestic type.
I think
I think if any of you lost your job you would be singing a different tune.
Barrett wrong as ususal
Once again Mike Barrett proves that he has no idea what he is talking about. Stick with real estate development on which you are dependent on kissing up to banks, City officials and the zoning boards. You understand NOTHING of real capitalism or the Constitution. It is NOT the federal government's job to be handing out money to states for anything. Anytime the feds get involved they put restrictions, stipulations or included unfunded mandates. In this case, the money is short-term but the program will never end (because govt. programs never do). You could not make it in any other business besides development, because you are always looking for a handout.
re: Gertzpoint
My initial comment was about how these kinds of problems (gross unemployment) unfairly land in the laps of the states tho' caused by the actions/inactions of elected officials at the NAT'L level.
Incompetence, criminality, indifference, Socialist agenda, whatever: the usual suspects (Clinton, Bush, now Obama, admins)& many in Congress guilty as the greediest bankers/most irresponsible of borrowers (remember, subprime meltdown kicked all this off; Clinton set the stage by getting rid of Glass-Steagall. While Bushies tried to raise the flag a few years ago & got beaten back by the Dem controlled Congress, aided by the media, he still shares blame for growing gov't & excessive spending 'til BHO came along, making even him look frugal.
So here we are: Obama (blind leading blind) dumping the toxic mess on the states, sweetened w/ a little bit of green "stimulus" & wrapped w/ more strings than the Budapest Philharmonic.
Nice try Gertz
That's another straw man fallacy (nods to evanj), nobody said illegals caused unemployment. The only implication was that illegals working jobs Americans could be in is only exacerbating the unemployment. And, once again, even that was only 'implied'.
When are Liberals going to learn of the connection between adding to the overhead of business and loss of jobs. Not to mention inflation in the form of passing the cost of increased unemployment benefits on to the consumer (which, affects those on unemployment... etc). It's a vicious cycle. If you want to stimulate the economy, you make it cheaper to do business. Which leads to more employment and cheaper products. You DON'T add to their already high taxes.
so it's the illegals that caused the unemployment????
"when it comes to dealing with the illegals who are no doubt working many jobs Americans could be doing right now as well as collecting benefits, and why has he picked a complete nitwit like HSD director Napolitano to bungle any hopes of securing our borders to prevent further abuse?"
I'm sorry, but I totally disagree that it's the illegals that have caused this unemployment.
Victim angle
The GOP's reaction to those that are out of work through no fault of their own and can't find work or buy bread to feed their family......
Ah, the classic victim angle. People are too stupid to take care of their own lives so we need mommy and daddy government to run it for them. How did all us morons every survive before government handouts?
Let 'em Eat Cake
The GOP's reaction to those that are out of work through no fault of their own and can't find work or buy bread to feed their family......
Let 'em eat cake!
Next election, vote them all out!
Saty the course..
No money ever comes from the Federal govt that doesn't have provisions and stipulations. The Feds routinely hamper states and lower levels of govt with their unfunded mandates. I applaud the GOP for rejecting this. Stick to your guns, folks. If the Pilot hates them for it, that's proof enough that they're doing something right!.
"They said the GOP had done plenty for the state's jobless"
Yep! The Bush economy got 'em laid off.
