The federal government has awarded $4.6 million in stimulus funding to Virginia to clean up leaks from underground petroleum storage tanks.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced the funding Wednesday. The EPA says a total of $197 million is being distributed across the country for assessment and cleanup of leaks.

Petroleum or other hazardous substances that leak from underground tanks can potentially seep into the soil and contaminate groundwater.
