Virginia agriculture officials are encouraging organic farmers to be counted in what they are calling the first wide-scale survey of organic producers.
The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services said the National Agricultural Statistics Service will conduct the survey in May through July. The survey will examine all aspects of organic agriculture, from production and marketing to income and expenses.
VDACS Commissioner Todd Haymore said Virginia had about 315 organic farms comprising 13,500 acres in 2007. Sales of organic products in 2007 totaled $14 million.
The 2009 survey is intended to help agriculture officials learn about the changing face of farming.

niche against the empire!
You will eat what Monsanto tells you to eat. Round-up resistent resistance is futile.
be local
"The changing face of farming"? If you call reversion a change, ok. Sixty years ago all farms were organic.
Please support your local farmers and farmers' markets. Virginia produce and products are superior to the picked-too-soon mexican/california produce that ripens in a truck.
Buy local, eat local, be local.
Wouldn't consider that a changing face
13,500 acres out of the 8.5 million is a long way from a changing face of farming. It's a tiny niche market.
