Virginians gloomy about future of environment

Posted to: Environment News Virginia

Virginians are pessimistic about the future of the state's natural environment, citing the health of the Chesapeake Bay and mountaintop coal removal as two top concerns, according to a survey released this week by Christopher Newport University's Center for Public Policy and the Virginia Environmental Endowment.

The statewide survey asked respondents for a general assessment of Virginia's natural environment today and 10 years from now. More than three-quarters of respondents assessed the state's current natural environment with a ranking of B or C, by far the largest categories. When asked about the environment 10 years from now, more respondents said it would get much worse than those who said it would get much better.

Despite an ongoing debate about global warming, 76.1 percent of respondents believe it is happening, but only 29.6 percent have made major changes to their behavior, the survey results said. Almost 60 percent have made minor changes.

Overall, respondents were concerned about several environmental issues, but the top two were the mountaintop removal of coal and the health of the Chesapeake Bay.

Last week, William C. Baker, president of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, called the Bay a "national disgrace." He offered his blunt assessment in releasing the annual State of the Bay report card, which grades the overall health of the Bay.

For 2008, the foundation gave the Bay a combined score of 28 on a scale of 1 to 100. In classroom terms, that equates to a D, the same grade as in 2007 and just one point higher than what the foundation first reported, in 1998.

Last month, the Chesapeake Bay Program, a government office leading cleanup efforts among six states, the U.S. government and Washington, D.C., gave the Bay a similar low environmental score.

Survey respondents were asked how much they would be willing to spend to protect the environment and natural resources.

Nearly eight in 10 respondents said they think it would be worth paying for a new car or new home if the cars used less gas and the homes less energy.

Only half support cutting funding for new highway construction to increase funding for rail, transit and other driving alternatives.

A tax credit of about $500 would be incentive for seven in 10 to make existing homes and buildings more energy efficient, but it would lead only half of the respondents to purchase a hybrid car.

Overall, those surveyed said they doubt the state's environment will improve.

Two-thirds believe Virginia's environment will stay the same or get worse in the next 10 years.

The survey included 659 randomly selected registered Virginia voters who were contacted by phone in March. It has a margin of error of about 3.8 percentage points.

It is the first of three planned surveys with the goal of providing an assessment of the public opinion and contributing to a public dialogue on the topic.

the Land

FurtherMore,
It is evident from all sources and recently confirmed by Scientific American
that there are Not enough resources and that there is Not enough time to avoid more destruction.

Why lie?

our Land

WE feel so sad since our land is sick,

not only the Chesapeake Bay, and the devestation from coal mining, but now the horrendous threat of uranium mining and the danger to our water supply.

Hi I'm from the govt I'm here to help

The earth will be flat once the new Green Czar enacts all these " feel good" half thought regulations upon businesses.
Before we emasculate the US with all of these Green regulations lets make sure we really want to lose any chance of future prosperity and maintaining military superiority.

We truly don't need more "feel good" measures from an inexperienced & unqualified president and administration hell bent on making the US a third world nation.

Furthermore; The NY Times has NO credibility whatsoever. I won't waste my time even trying to view the link

Nature of the debate

The Pilot article refers to an ongoing debate. Actually, the debate about whether global warming exists and whether it poses a serious threat to life on Earth is over. The only real debate right now is just how extreme and comprehensive we need to be in our efforts to slow down global warming without suffocating economic growth. Nevertheless, there will always be handful of people who insist that global warming and the threat it poses are a hoax, just as there are still people who argue that the Earth is flat.

bogus agreed

Absolute nonsense! Virginians are not only optimistic but can see the continued improvements in our waterways and marshlands. The only negativity I see is towards the obvious tree-hugging propaganda to facilitate more and more laws taking away both access and use of these by the Virginia citizen. Sort of coincides with the increasing posture towards environmental Tyranny by our federal government in the form of the greatest hoax on earth right now......Global Warming.

Bogus study -

Bogus survey - Bogus statements - I am so tired of the ill informed making so many erroneous statements concerning our environment. We are all good stewarts of the environment - we all re-cycle, we all use phosphorous free detergents, we don't purchase bottled water, we refill drinking containers, we pick up errant we don't frequent drive thru windows at fast food eateries, discarded refuse from the sidewalks and streets around us, we all burn un-leaded gas, etc. I don't get the fear factor here, The Earth will prevail and we 'humans' will perish in time, inevitable, ask God, he said so. Bogus Story, what a croc.

Another message from a whiney tree hugger

This is for the folks who are upset about all the new environmental safeguards to protect the OBX beaches. Our environment is faltering but yet some folks are just enraged that they can't use it (and abuse it) as in days gone by. How much of a wake up call to do you folks need to get it? This situation is dire but yet you sit back and complain about what you can't do. It isn't about MONEY anymore. Money will not save us but a change of mindset will.
If the situation comes to the drastic demise that it might, you will might be whining and complaining because you won't be able to live life. If Mother Nature goes, rest assured humans will not be far behind. Let's hope the wake up call doesn't come toooooo late! Let's hope for a miracle. Change your attitude.

Naivety

"Our environment is healthier now than it was 20 or 30 years ago."?

Naivety must be a nice place to live.

STOP THE SPIN- PRINT THE TRUTH

Let's stop this mindless rush to jump to critical judgement that we are somehow capable of "fixing" the environment. The only "Fix" I see is an dishonest attempt by elitists , Al " Blowhard" Gore, to control businesses and create a new political party.
Our environment is healthier now than it was 20 or 30 years ago.
This endless drivel about how we need need more government regulations is moronic. We have the global warming fear mongering elitists fabricating the "truth" only to discover after closer inspection that the polar regions are actually expanding. Stop the spin and print the truth.
Any regulations imposed on businesses will be paid for by the consumers and taxpayers TWICE. One payment to create and manage the new government enforcement team and the second payment when we , the consumers are charged higher rates for the services.
Next time you enjoy a state park thank a hunter and the fishermen for their financial support. Our license and sporting goods purchases are funding these state parks and wildlife management commissions.
Before you donate to any "environmental" group do your homework and investigate how much of your money is actually used for its true pur

LAUGHING

THOSE THAT MADE MILLIONS OF DOLLARS AT THE ENVIROMENTS EXPENSE ARE LAUGHING ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK...THE POLITITIANS GAVE THEM THE PERMISSION TO OVERCRAB THE BAY AND STRIP THE MOUNTAINTOPS ALL IN THE NAME OF MONEY...GREED...GREED...GREED
