where has sanity gone?
WHOLESALE SLAUGHTER at Virginia Tech. Portsmouth girl murdered in her home. Minister shot to death in his church. High school athletes murdered. Young man blown away because he wouldn't surrender his jewelry. And now, two young Chesapeake men gunned down at close range at their front door ('2 teens dead, 3 hurt in shootings,' front page, April 16).
Where has sanity gone? If this bizarre behavior can't be explained by too much violence in movies and video games, then what? Have the pressures of life led to a shoot-first, worry-later mind-set?
Keep shooting and eventually Uncle Sam is going to say it's time to surrender those weapons. When that happens, it will be the wild West all over again.

You made me laugh, batgeek.
Can't say we don't get our money's worth here. Ha. Everyone's an expert on everything. I'm highly impressed.
Neat!
Sensationalism, fallacy, and fantasy ALL IN ONE THREAD!!
After reading today's editorial from ...
... the man who lost his sister in the Tech shootings, and how easy it turned out for this young many to buy 10 guns at a gun show (he wanted to see just how easy it was) I don't really care who (felon, mentally disturbed - you name it) gets a gun.
The NRA obviously gets their panties in a wad at any suggestion of ANY control of ANY type of weapons. So, why go on and on about it? Let's just give everyone a gun and let them carry it un-concealed, concealed or stuck up there where the sun don't shine.
Logic related to this topic is non-existent, and frankly why worry about it. Let the shoot outs in the bars take place as they may. Let the criminals who want guns find a gun show, and let the NRA feel proud of all their hard work, and support of the 2nd amendment.
Think About This
The Politicians in the USA would never take the guns from the people of this country. Now...ammo for those guns is a different story.

I wish we could have that, too. We used to have it. But the difference was that we were taught to respect our elders from birth, by our parents. There is no substitute for a proper upbringing.
There is also no substitute for parental neglect. Once kids are raised by the streets and become feral hoodlums, no billion dollar "programs" can send them back to the womb, and start over with their home training. Even if parents can't be prosecuted for their children's violent crimes, their children's blood is on their own hands. They can't wash it off with baseless accusations against cops and teachers, or claims that their little hoodlums were "just getting their lives back together, before the police cut their lives short".
Sorry, but that’s life.
violence is now the norm
I remember when TV first became popular and the wild west programs led parents to buy toy guns. The idea was pooh-poohed that they would have an effect of children. Years later it was proven to be true. Our present television programs are filled with violence, blood and gore, thus our children grow up with the thought that the way to settle an arguement is with a gun, knife or brickbat. The British have crime stories, but no gore, comedies with no sex or innuendos, but we have glorified these programs. It is the height of insanity to allow guns in bars and night clubs. Whatever happened to settle problems with fists or the courts. Our young people carry knives and guns without knowing the consequences of using them. Maybe we should become a kinder gentler nation, love for our brothers and sisters, with a good dose of respect for our elders. Who knows, it may work and they will learn that guns and violence is not the answer to all problems. Dream on Lady, just dream on.
I was raised by an iron
I was raised by an iron hand. My parents came from Europe and didn't believe in coddling thier 8 children. We worked morning till night on the farm before we came to America, become naturalized citizens and became hardworking families. My father would keep us in line with one look. We were never told we were special. We were made to do homework, graduate and go to work to continue our college paid for by working ouselves.
Not once did this man ever have to say anything loud to keep us in line. We were taught young by a smack,..Today, my eight sisters and brothers have families, college educations, we work every day and have our own kids that are respectful to elders , work and have gone to college. We have not grown to abuse our children even though we were raised extremely tough. We also loved our parents enormously because of how we were allowed to grow up. None of us became addicts, murderers. So being raised by the fist does not make one strike back..that is a fallacy because if it did create monsters, what happened in our family?? There were eight of us spanked, hit with a belt, bat, stick and fist..but we still grew up loving and caring. It is called choice and paying t
Fat chance
"eventually Uncle Sam is going to say it's time to surrender those weapons"
Saying it and actually getting them will be impossible and bloody. If you think there's a lot of gun violence now, imagine the violence that will occur as the police are dispatched to legal gun owners’ homes to secure their guns. I would submit that an awful lot won't give up their guns willingly.

donvabeach wrote, "Sue said: take away the guns...and the hoods will have to use knives". I don't think so. I'd rather say: "take away the guns, and the hoods will still have all the guns they want".
Don, you have a clearly established precedent to support your opinion. Crack cocaine has been declared illegal in every square inch of the United States of America. But, still, it's widely available on every street corner within the "hood", even for crack addicts that need crack EVERY DAY.
As much as I love our Constitution's Bill of Rights, I'll sacrifice all of them, if the liberals can do one thing. Since crack cocaine is already totally barred from our nation, if our government can eradicate crack from our nation to the point that no human being can obtain it, I'll give up all of my Constitutional rights. Any liberals out there wanna take me up on that bet?
Many causes and reasons...
There are many reasons for why there are 'spikes' in violence at any given time. First and foremost, regardless of age, all criminals make the CHOICE to commit crimes, period! Some 'tools' may make a desired result easier, like using a gun vice a knife, but regardless, it all starts with the choice to do so.
As far as crimes involving kids, most of them can be ascribed to the breakdown of basic family functions. Not all 'broken homes' breed bad kids, but way too many of them do. WAY, WAY too much glorification has been assigned by the usual (ahem) 'cultural' entities like movies, TV, and music where righting 'being dissed' can only be accomplished by disposing of the person or people who did 'the dissing'. Again, those don't explain ALL of what contribute to the violence affecting young people, but I believe it's a big part of what affects MANY of them....
