Basketball: Painter looking at Hokies

Posted to: High Schools Sports

DeShawn Painter is back on the recruiting market.

The former Booker T. Washington center, released from his letter of intent with Florida last month, is looking at playing college basketball closer to home, in the ACC.

Painter visited Virginia Tech last weekend. He’s scheduled to visit N.C. State this weekend and Maryland May 8.

“Florida just wasn’t the best fit for me,” he said Wednesday night. “I’m just trying to find the right fit and stay close to home, near my family, so they can actually see me play.”

The 6-foot-9 Painter, rated the No. 127 player in the class of 2009 by rivals.com, signed with Florida in November. He averaged 14.2 points and nearly 10 rebounds per game as a junior at Booker T. in 2007-08. He transferred to Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham to better prepare for college on and off the court, he said. He will graduate May 17.

“It’s harder here,” he said. “I had to get used to the military lifestyle, get focused and get my grades.”

Painter said he plans to make a decision soon after completing his visits.
