Beach can't close gap over site for new Lesner Bridge

Posted to: News Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH

Sleeping 78 feet from a busy bridge is tolerable.

But when city officials started designing a wider and taller new Lesner Bridge, closer to their buildings - 25 feet in one case - the members of the Maryland and Virginia pilot associations protested.

The noise levels from traffic would disturb their sleep, take away too much of their property and potentially force them to move, the pilot associations said.

"I was afraid our station would be degraded," said John Hamill, the first vice president of the Association of Maryland Pilots.

The pilots, who escort commercial ships up and down the Virginia coast, weren't the only ones to complain about the proposed alignment of the planned $90 million Lesner.

Dimitri Hionis, who owns Bubba's Restaurant, the Lesner Inn and a shellfish company, all next to the pilots, feared he would lose parking spaces and business.

The City Council reluctantly agreed earlier this month to a more northerly path for the new Lesner, bypassing the pilots' and Hionis' properties.

But that has sparked something of a civil war with condominium residents to the north and some civic leaders along Shore Drive.

The northern alignment brings the bridge 16 feet closer to the 3556 Condominium, said Dorinda Ennis, a condo owner.

"The northern alignment takes a premier building, ours, and squishes it near the bridge," Ennis said. "It was very disappointing."

After almost two years of public meetings about the new Lesner Bridge, Todd Solomon, a civic activist along Shore Drive, said he is surprised by the city's decision to go north, considering that most local residents preferred the initial proposal.

The city is trying to design the bridge replacement quickly so it can qualify for a potential second round of federal stimulus funding.

"Just to get it fast-tracked for funding, we shouldn't shortchange the community," Solomon said.

The bridge, built in 1958, is slowly deteriorating, though weight limits haven't been posted yet. Plans to replace and expand the bridge to six lanes have been in the works for several years. The City Council has set aside $10.1 million for the project, with another $44 million planned for the next five years.

But without federal money, the project is unlikely to be done soon.

"I think we're putting ourselves in a good position to get the funding," Councilman Jim Wood said.

Wood and Vice Mayor Louis Jones, whose districts include portions of the bridge, said they initially supported the first proposal too but were swayed by the objections from the business owners.

The Lynnhaven Inlet gets frequent dredging by the federal government because the pilot boats travel in and out of the area, Wood said.

That dredging provides sand replenishment for some of the Chesapeake Bay beaches.

Beach officials also feared legal wrangling over how much property they would have to take with the first proposal.

The city will still have to acquire some property from the former Duck-In site to accommodate the northern alignment, but that may not pose as much of a problem because the condominiums planned for that site are no longer viable in this economy, Jones said.

"The bottom line is the negative impacts on the northern alignment is so much less than the southern alignment," Jones said. "We just had to make a choice."

Wake Up!!!!

This is not about widening the bridge! This is about Indigo Dunes, which will not be allowed to be built without the lesner bridge being expanded. Once the truth is actually reported then the the citizens can participate in true democracy and vote No to the expansion.

lesner bridge 3 lanes

The reason they are building a 6 lane bridge is because they are assuming shore drive will eventually go 6 lanes. What other reason could there be?

4 Lanes are enough

I drive over the Lesner Bridge twice per day. There is never a delay that is related to having 4 lanes (occasional accident creates a tie-up). There is no need for 6 lanes anywhere on Shore Drive. Shore Drive has very few backups that amount to anything. Don't make it harder for folks to walk to the beaches. What the Lesner Bridge (and Shore Drive) needs is better pedestrian and bike passage. So if 2 lanes are added they should be for walkers and bikers not for cars. I bet our good President will give some extra 'green' stimulous money for Bike/hike facilities.

"the vision for route 60"

Bretticus, I have to ask, whose "vision of route 60" are you talking about? Certainly not my vision for it, or the vision of the vast majority of people who live along that corridor of route 60. And if our opinions about Shore Drive / route 60 don't matter, whose opinions do? Its not like people take that segment of "Route 60" as a thoroughfare to expeditiously travel to the outer banks, NC or beyond - they get on the interstates or highway 168 for that. As developed as the Shore Drive corridor and the oceanfront already is, I would shudder to think of the additional development (and crowding) required to necessitate Shore Drive being expanded to 6 lanes. That kind of "development" is at odds with the "quality of life" I wanted when I purchased a home there, and I am very certain thousands of others will agree with me on this.

Put in a light rail and cost twice an much.

bridge

problem solve closed the road for the next 2 years (unless VDOT is evolved then it will be 3 years) removed the bridge build a new one this way nobody loose any parking spots and baby's in the tower will here the old bridge blown up and only the noise of the new one being built. There is a safety issue also this way no dumb driver runs over any road construction worker by accident when the traffic is reduced to one lane and cars don't have to stop for it.

6 lanes?

Great a six lane bridge on a four lane road. And that will only cause a back up when everybody has to merge back down into four lanes again! Not to mention it will take them 10 years to complete this project and the nightmares of traffic we will endure while they make this mess. Not a good plan guys! Fix the bridge we have or build a better 4 lane bridge with a jogger and bike lane - now that's something we NEED!!!

Traffic Counts

Is it really necessary to build a six-lane bridge? Does the amount of traffic currently using Shore Drive force the need for such a bridge? Or is the city forcing the bridge issue just for some stimulus money? How about fixing the existing bridge first? I have never been at a point as to be stuck in traffic because of too many cars, its always been an accident that backs the traffic up. Do some traffic counts. If you ask me the existing bridge would be just fine with some repair work to extend it's life and cheaper too.

Lesner Bridge

Here we go again! Our council people and civic "leaders" wanting to spend more of the city's taxpayer money on something we just do not need. And I agree with other comments that it's all for the sake of getting "stimulus" money. The city has been pushing this "new bridge" for some time and after living off Shore drive for over 20 years, I've never seen the need for an expansion, especially to six lanes! The only time there is a tie up is when there is perhaps an accident on Shore Drive, but I could probably count those incidents on one hand. I'm just so sick and tired of these politicians spending money on pet projects! And.... the bridge is falling, the bridge is falling???? It was built in 1958 for heavens sake! Has anyone in this city heard of the Brooklyn Bridge, the GW Bridge, etc.... good grief!!!! And they were built when???!!!

Let's get it on~!

Folks, the Lesner is vital to our city and way of life. Let's get it replaced.

No one wants to pay for it so the State of Virginia will help, IF we build a 6 lane bridge consistent with the vision of Rt 60.

Let's make a decision and move on. We need the stimulus terribly and we need a bridge that is not in danger of collapse in the future.

Split the difference between the Condo's and the Pilot building and get on with it. Those folks moved into those properties located next to a busy state route knowingly and voluntarily. Road construction and widening is a consequence of the development they added to by moving to that area... Let's get it on!
