The search has been suspended for a 42-year-old man who fell into the James River early Saturday morning.

Angelo Burnett fell into the water just before 4 a.m. and had not been located as of 4 p.m., said Officer Harold Eley, a police spokesman.

The Newport News Fire Department has ended its search, but the Coast Guard continued looking until late in the weekend, WVEC-TV was reporting this morning. An HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from the Elizabeth City air station was sent to help scan the waters.

The search by the Coast Guard also has been suspended, the station reported.

The incident happened when Burnett attempted to climb over a fence onto a public pier that had not yet opened, Eley said. Burnett and a friend had been dropped off there after taking a ride on another friend’s boat.

Burnett fell into the water near the Davis Boat Works Inc. shipyard and the Newport News Marine Terminal, Eley said.
