A multiple-vehicle crash Thursday sent one man to the hospital with serious injuries and shut down part of Interstate 264 near the Norfolk-Virginia Beach line for about 90 minutes, according to an alert from the Virginia Department of Transportation.
Sgt. Michelle Cotten, a Virginia State Police spokeswoman, said the crash occurred at about 6:30 p.m. A man driving a Ford SUV at a high rate of speed between the Witchduck and Newtown roads exits tried to cross four lanes of eastbound traffic, struck a pickup truck, lost control of his SUV, struck another vehicle in the HOV lane, and went airborne over the Jersey wall. The SUV landed on the westbound side of I-264.
Cotten said the SUV driver, a 20-year-old Suffolk man, was flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with multiple injuries. No other serious injuries were reported.
Shortly before 7 p.m., a helicopter landed on the westbound side of I-264, temporarily shutting down both sides of I-264. The injured driver was wheeled to the helicopter at about 7:10 p.m., and soon after, a single lane of traffic in both directions was opened.
Both sides of I-264 were reopened to traffic at about 8 p.m.
