Two women were flown to a hospital with critical injuries following a three-vehicle crash on northbound Interstate 664.
About 5:25 p.m., Marion Denson of Chesapeake was driving south on I-664, south of Dock Landing Road, when her car crossed the grassy median and struck a Honda Civic head-on as it was driving north on I-664, said Sgt. Michelle Cotten of the Virginia State Police.
Denson was thrown around the inside of her car and Jacqueline Yarborough of Hampton was ejected from the Civic, Cotten said. Neither was wearing a seatbelt.
The Civic then struck a vehicle also traveling north on I-664, but the driver, Maggie Jones of Smithfield, was not injured.
Both Denson and Yarborough were flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with critical, but not life-threatening injuries, Cotten said.
Denson was not impaired with alcohol at the time of the crash, Cotten said, but will be charged with reckless driving.
Northbound I-664 was closed to traffic until about 6:30 p.m. when a single lane was opened. The crash was cleared and the interstate completely reopened after 7:30 p.m., according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
