U.S. Rep. Glenn Nye, D-Norfolk, gained House approval for his first piece of legislation this week.
The House approved his Veterans Business Center Act on Wednesday as part of a larger legislative package.
Nye, who took office in January, said the measure would help veterans get access to skills and possibly investors to help them set up their own small businesses.
"Our veterans leave the military with valuable skills and experience, but they often don't have the resources to apply those skills to the challenge of starting and running a small business," he said in a floor speech before HR2352 passed, 406-5. The bill now goes to the Senate.
If it became law, the bill would establish business centers nationwide to assist veterans with training, access to capital and information about becoming a government contractor. The centers would be located in areas such as Hampton Roads that have large veteran populations.

Legislation to help new veterans
It is "ironic that the group that makes tremendous sacrifices in fighting for our freedom throughout the world has to come back home to fight not to be ignored and to fight for their economic well being." The failure of the federal agencies, particularly the Defense Department, to meet a 3 percent set-aside goal for service-disabled, veteran-owned small businesses (SDVOSBs) is another example of why we have so many homeless veterans and such a high number of unemployed. This is a very dangerous situation encouraging veterans especially service disabled veteran to go into government contracting. First of all the government is not prepared to do business with these veterans. Since 1999 there is a deficit of over $130B the government promised veterans which they didn't get. We go from the front of the line in War and to the back of the line in procurement. The contracting officers really don't want to do business with veterans currently and this is where the focus needs to be. It’s a very noble gesture but veteran contracting must be fixed first or we are endorsing many veterans to lose everything they ever fought for because there is no pot of gold at the end of the rainbow as
NEW Veterans?
OK Pilot, your title implies the bill affects "new" veterans, yet the article does not.
So, can all veterans expect to participate/benefit if they so desire, or is Rep Nye favoring just the select few (1st time voters perhaps)?
