HAMPTON

Hampton University wants to replace its coal-powered steam plant with a geothermal heating and cooling system as part of a green initiative.

Hampton spokeswoman Yuri Rodgers Milligan says the school has applied for a $15 million state energy grant and plans to submit two more grant proposals in June. The school is seeking a total $35 million for the project.

School of Engineering and Technology Dean Eric Sheppard says the geothermal system is similar to a heat pump.

Once grant funding is obtained, Sheppard says the system will be installed throughout the campus in phases.

Hampton's steam plant was built in 1886 and renovated in 1946.

This is a very interesting

This is a very interesting idea. But I have a question, in Hampton is geothermal energy? If not, then there is another issue - how they are going to do this?

Good idea for a change

At lot of things that list "being green" as a motivation are big wastes of money, but this one sounds pretty solid. You could probably make a museum out of the existing steam plant.
