McDonnell, Bolling herald government reform package

Republicans Bob McDonnell and Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling today presented a sweeping good government plan to create budget transparency and place restrictions on certain political contributions, among other proposals.

The two men presented the plan Thursday during a conference call.

Some of its provisions call for the creation of a watchdog group to eliminate waste in state agencies, greater lobbyist disclosure, a bipartisan redistricting commission, and reformation of the judicial appointment process.

In a written statement, the duo expressed support for changing state rules to allow voters to elect a governor to a second consecutive term. At present, Virginia law allows governors to serve just one term.

McDonnell, the presumptive GOP nominee for governor, and Bolling, who is seeking re-election, are running as a united Republican ticket this year.
