NORFOLK
Incumbent Thomas Moss Jr. won the Democratic nomination for city treasurer by more than a 6-1 margin Saturday. At a caucus at Granby High School, Moss received 602 votes; he will move on to seek his third term during the general election in November.
Sherry White-Battle, an investor and businesswoman, had 91 votes, said a spokeswoman for the Norfolk Democratic Party.
"I'm just delighted... for the margin to be as high as it was," Moss said. "It was a big win."
Moss, the former speaker of the House of Delegates, said he'll continue to focus on streamlining the treasurer's office. He said he's made it possible to make payments online and eliminated city stickers.
"Nobody really likes to pay taxes, but I've tried to make it as easy as possible."
The race was White-Battle's fourth attempt to win a public seat. She ran against Moss four years ago and ran for clerk of court in 2003 and for the House of Delegates in 2002.
"Nobody said it would be easy to fight the system and try to correct it," she said.

White Battle is a candidate of change
For once we have someone willing to challenge the mainstream. I commend Sherry White-Battle for running and giving people a choice. People don't like her because she speaks her mind and is unwilling to play the Good Ole Boy game. She is resilient and will not stop until we make real change. Unseating Moss would be difficult for anyone, but at least we have someone whose willing to stand up and challenge him! Go Sherry! Keep them in check!
How Long
How long before Sherry White-Battle claims Tom Moss' win was part of a conspiracy and wants to file a lawsuit over it?
Both bad choices.
One is a political bully who continues to dip his beak into the public trough and the other is a clueless gadfly looking for a little notoriety and a steady paycheck. C'mon, Norfolk! Can't we do better than this? Well .... as I look at the City Council make-up, I guess I answered my own question. Maybe we need to just fumigate City Hall.
Treasurer
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the term 'treasurer' just a glorified term for 'accountant'?
Any other candidates?
I'd love to vote out Moss, but how does losing several other elections and whining loudly about it qualify White-Battle for this position?
I don't understand government.
In any Corporation, the Treasurer is not elected by popular support, but is hired based on his/her experience and qualifications. If the only qualifications are endless years as a legislator, or as a small business owner, neither type of experience would get the candidate past the "resume sorting" phase, much less towards even a first interview.
A Treasurer must have very specific and extensive financial experience, and at least an MBA or MPA. A CPA with broad managerial experience in the public sector of audit engagements might also be a viable route to the Treasurer's slot.
I don't know either of the candidates, but from what I've read, it would seem that neither is truly qualified for the job.
Good luck, Norfolk!
Ms. Battle has not a clue
Ms. Battle has not a clue what she is talking about. Sounds like she just runs her mouth to hear herself talk.
Democrats
Nice to see good ole positive issues-focused Democratic campaigning in Norfolk....right!
Personal, petty, negative...good to see the true colors of the Norfolk Democratic machine when anyone dares to challenge it.
No Clue
She has no clue whatsoever.
And Moss is no better - why would he hire Burfoot and, perhaps more importantly, why doesn't Burfoot understand that his position in the Treasurer's office is a conflict of interest?
Norfolk government just keeps looking worse and worse everyday.
Sherry White-Battle just doesn't get it...
Sherry White-Battle apparently does not even understand the office that she is running for. Basically for her, it is which ever way the wind blows! She is just another wannabe. Sherry, instead of wasting your money running for office and losing every time, why don't you do something useful with the money and give it to charity where it can be used wisely?
