New in comments: threads and controls

If you post comments to PilotOnline.com and HamptonRoads.com, you’ll notice two new features, beginning today.

We now feature threaded comments – meaning that you can respond to a specific comment under a story. You’ll see that each posted comment now has a “reply” button, located directly under the comment. Click on “reply” if you want to respond to a particular comment.

If you aren’t responding to any comment specifically and want to comment on the story in general, just post your comment as always, by clicking on the "Add New Comment" link at the top of the comments.

At the bottom of each page, you’ll also see new ways to control the comments. Go to “Comment Viewing Options” and you can choose to:

- View comments in the new “threaded” format or the original “flat” format.

- View the entire post or only the headline for each comment.

- Sort comments by “oldest first” or “newest first."

- Choose how many comments you see on a page, from 10 to 300. (Warning: A higher number means pages will take longer to load.)

We’ve made these changes in response to your suggestions and ideas. Let us know what you think. Post your comments and questions below. We especially welcome ideas on how we can further improve the comments experience for participants and readers.

Thanks,

- the PilotOnline.com and HamptonRoads.com moderation team

I'm liking the changes, Pilot!

Maybe you can answer a question for me. I've been posting here for over a year, and up until I canceled my paper subscription, my comments were posted without prior approval. As far as I know, there have been no complaints about the content of my posts, and I can't see where I've violated the rules, so don't really understand why my comments now need staff approval prior to posting. If I've committed an infraction, please explain so I and other posters can avoid the frustration of having to wait for our comments to be approved, and, decrease the number of comments you have to read.

Auto comment

I checked your comment history, and it seems that our profanity filter misflagged a comment and kicked you back to approval status. Since you had nothing to warrant moderation, I returned you to autocomment status. Best, David M. Putney, PilotOnline producer.
