New policy on uniforms in Norfolk schools up for vote

Posted to: Education News Norfolk

The School Board is scheduled to vote to day on a uniform policy for Norview Middle School and to refine changes to a divisionwide regulation regarding the standardized outfits.

Under the new plan, more than half of the parents at a school must respond to a survey, and at least 60 percent of the respondents must favor uniforms for the policy to be approved by the School Board.

The board currently approves the standardized clothing only at schools that can demonstrate that at least 70 percent of the families favor them.

After several months of discussion, board members in April agreed to make it easier for a school to implement a uniform policy. They opted not to mandate the clothing for all elementary and middle school students.

This year, students in 14 elementary schools, three middle schools, an early childhood center and the Madison alternative school wear them.

If the board approves the request by Norview Middle, students would be required to wear uniforms beginning in the fall.

I enthusiastically endorse the idea of school uniforms.

I wish they had uniforms for every child from preschool through high school. One excellent website that discusses school uniforms is: www.terrebonneparish.com/local/educational/schools/uniforms/uniforms.htm

Besides the cost savings to the parents, read this quote from their website: "...The use of uniforms at school, as opposed to the latest fashions, also may help the child avoid ridicule, embarrassment, or abuse from others over the 'have and have-not' stigma. Uniforms assist in avoiding such conflicts by removing the chance for confrontation over clothing, at least during the child's at-school time..."

Many of those who decry the limits on their children's "self-expression" and personal freedom are merely cowering, obsequious sock puppets who are being manipulated by the fashion industry, TV, and their own kids. It takes a strong parent to do the right thing. In this case, school uniforms ARE the "right thing"!

old people

Those who want uniforms are devoid of ideas, archaic and nuts. I say NO No NO NO to uniforms. Uniforms do nothing for a child. Childrens behaviors do not change by wearing uniforms.
Norfolk School Board are Ostrichs with head in the sand bereft of an appropriate amount of gray matter to help our schools compete and our students excel.
Supt Jones is too busy with his photo-ops to know the system is in trouble and take remedial measures. The schools are content to manipulate student statistics in order to meet budgetary requirements.
Madison is in trouble. Nobody in administration cared before it got to here and now. They were mostly black students. The teachers tried, overwhelmed as they were.
Our High Schools are failing our kids. Broadus prize poor indicator of school accomplishment. Black kids drop out from too many courses or fail in their senior year. I've discovered no one really cares
