Public safety leaders endorse Stolle for Beach sheriff

Posted to: Elections News Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH

The Fraternal Order of Police, Virginia Beach Professional Firefighters, the City Council and leaders of statewide law enforcement organizations endorsed state Sen. Ken Stolle for sheriff Tuesday.

"I'm humbled by the support that the different leaders... have placed in me," said Stolle, a Virginia Beach Republican.

Stolle is a lawyer and former Beach police officer. He's opposed for sheriff by police Capt. John Bell Jr., who is making his first bid for public office. He runs the Beach Police Department's internal affairs office. The candidates are vying to succeed Sheriff Paul Lanteigne, who decided not to run for re-election.

Bell has been endorsed by former Mayor Meyera Oberndorf, Del. Joe Bouchard, D-Virginia Beach, and Greg Underwood, Norfolk's commonwealth's attorney.

Whatup's comments are out of line

In response to “no morals” posted by “whatup”, I have great concern with the libelous statement you made on 5/13 at 9:03 a.m. I have worked with Senator Stolle in his law firm for many years. To the best of my knowledge, he has never represented any crooked cops and has never attacked a police officer in a hearing. Not only have I checked into this, but I’m familiar with all of the representation he did as an attorney for the Fraternal Order of Police. At no time has Senator Stolle represented a crooked police officer. Unless you have just made this up, name the police officer who was arrested. If you refuse, then everyone will know that you made all of this up. I know you’ll refuse, because none of the officers Senator Stolle represented were arrested for corruption. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Replacement

Who should replace Stolle if he wins? What about Craig Hudgins?

The Democratic opponent

You don't think the Democratic opponent, Capt. John Bell, is doing the same thing? He is nearing retirement - he can probably retire any time as he has been on the police department at least 30 years. He would be doing the same thing - getting a higher paying job so he can retire with higher retirement. You would do the same thing if given the opportunity. But what is more important, is who is more qualified for the position. Stolle is definitely more qualified.

Are you kidding me? What

Are you kidding me? What about the undersheriff? Why would the city employees endorse Stolle, when the only reason he is running is to get a bigger RETIREMENT in the end. The retirement money will come from the citizens of VA Beach! Hello Andy Fox why aren't you reporting on this!!!

Law enforcement deserve higher pay

than what they get here. So if Senator Stolle was able to get the support for higher pay and/or benefits for law enforcement, good for him. They do not get paid enough here.....and many times they pay with their life. Granted, we have some cops who shouldn't be cops, but for the most part, they do a good job. If you don't think they do, ride along with them on a nice, hot summer night at the oceanfront and see for yourself what they have to put up with. And if you respond "that's what they are paid to do, if they don't like it they can leave..." then YOU get out there and do the job.....you will have a different view point. As far as Senator Stolle doing this to get a better retirement....jealous???? So what - no different than a former City Manager taking an early payout retirement and then going south to be City Manager in a different City. He used the system.

No Morals

I recall many years ago Stolle representing a crooked police officer who was fired. I recall the grievance panel where Stolle painted a picture that this crooked cop should not have been fired. Okay, he was hired to do that. But what made it so bad was Stolle decided to attack the officers who stood up to expose the crooked cop. I remember Stolle asking one cop if he was proud that he turned on a fellow cop. Stolle attempted to paint a picture to the panel that the good cops were wrong for not covering for the bad cop. Fortunetly the panel didn't buy it and the bad cop was fired. I will never forget how Stolle treated the good cops. I will never trust him and hope he does not get the support of the people of Virginia Beach. He is a politician and that's all.

Factfinder is correct.....

....this is another example of a politician looking out for himself at our expense. Stolle has been kissing the behinds of the FOP and Sheriff's Department for years as well as pushing through raises and perks for them from his position as state senator, so it should not be a surprise that they support him. John Steinbeck was correct in his summation that honest and politician are anti-thematic.

Bi-Partisan Politics

From what I hear those Public Figures Include:

The Current Sheriff Paul Lanteigne
Former Sheriff Frank Drew
Gov. Kaine
Sen. Warner (and former Gov.)
Soon to be Gov. McDonnell

Sounds like a pretty impressive list so far. I can't wait to see the extent of Sen. Stolle's endorsements. He has been a trendsetter while serving us in the State Senate and gained respect across the aile. This is what we need in VB to continue the path of excellence and bi-partisian politics in the Sheriff's Dept. We have had the privilege of Sheriff Lanteigne's service with his committment to his staff and our public safety.

What will Lanteigne do next? I hope he will continue to serve the VB community; we will be lost without him in some compacity.

Good Luck Stolle!! Keep up the Great Work!!

Taking it for granted

No doubt both candidates are qualified for the position of sheriff.

However, I would normally vote Republican but not this time. There is something wrong when someone "expects" or feels as though a position "is theirs" in the case of Sen. Stolle.

Getting his top 3 yrs for retirement shouldn't be our concern. I understand that Stolle has told his opponent not to run because "people know me and I can raise more money than you and you will only get embarassed" if you run.

That's a shame! Even a favorite son who becomes arrogant and believes a job is "their's by right" may find out that voter's will respond to vote for the qualified underdog.

Stolle is the Only Choice

Ken Stolle has been committed to the City of Virginia Beach all of his life. Between his years on the Virginia Beach Police Department and his years in the State Senate he has just under 30 years of service to the people of this City. He is a recognized expert on Law Enforcement issues across the state and the people of Virginia Beach will greatly benefit from that knowledge. His passion for law enforcement is deep and he will constantly work to help keep the citizens of the City safe.

I'm voting for Stolle, and so should you.

Senator Stolle is the best candidate

Not only is he a former police officer, but his experience in the Virginia legislature will be a definite plus. The high standards of the Sheriff's Office will continue and he will maintain an excellent working relationship with the police department.

wouldn't you?

factfinder,
wouldn't you do the same? That's a smart move for Stolle. Not to mention that he is very well qualified and experienced w/ the city of Va. Beach.
He's had a long and successful career in LE and he would be deserving of this position. The 3yrs salary for his retirement would be the last of my worries......don't hate!

It's at times like this I'm glad to live in Virginia Beach.

Usually, when I go to vote, I end up voting for the "lesser of two evils".

It's nice that, when I go into the booth this time, I'll have my choice of two fine candidates.

Either way, Virginia Beach wins.

Sheriff

This election should be really interesting. Sounds like Stolle wants to be sure he gets his Virginia Retirement System three highest years and the law enforceemnt retirement supplement. From high state profile to low regional profile.
