The Coast Guard and Virginia Beach rescue units suspended their search this afternoon for a 58-year-old man who fell off a boat near the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel on Sunday night.
Two men were on the boat when the operator fell in near the first tunnel headed north from Virginia Beach, the Coast Guard said. The incident was reported just before 10 p.m. Sunday. The other man on the boat was not hurt.
The man who fell overboard, described by the Coast Guard as 58 years old, apparently lost his balance when he stood up and fell overboard, said Bruce Nedelka, division chief for Virginia Beach Emergency Medical Services.
In a news release, the Coast Guard said the man was wearing a windbreaker and shorts with no personal flotation device.
Several agencies and a Coast Guard helicopter were searching. A number of EMS volunteers were helping in the search, which included dogs sniffing the shoreline and ATVs searching after them, Nedelka said.
The search resumed this morning, but was suspended at noon today, the Coast Guard said. The man's name has not been released pending notification of his next of kin.
