Stewart shines in All-Star race; Mayfield talks
Thoughts and observations from the all-star race and analyzing the Mayfield saga.
First the race and then Mayfield
# As long as Kyle Busch is in an all-star event it's always going to be interesting.
Busch went from fourth to first on a restart in the final segment (although the move didn't count when Jimmie Johnson spun, forcing a complete restart). Then Busch was in the middle of a three-wide situation a few laps later. Jeff Gordon was on the inside, Busch in the middle and Ryan Newman on the outside. Busch and Gordon hit. Busch bounced into Newman and bounced back into Gordon, who spun and came back up the track and hit the wall. Gordon publicly didn't lay the blame on anyone for that incident.
Kyle went on to finish 7th but avoided reporters after the race so his thoughts on the race? We don't know.
This isn't the first time Busch has avoided reporters. In a way, he can do what he chooses but what do you think about that? If you are a Busch fan does it bother you not to hear from him when things don't go his way? Or does it matter? it's become a growing topic. Does this matter or is too much being made of it?
# Matt Kenseth said he screwed up at the end, allowing Tony Stewart to pass him with less than 2 laps left.
Kenseth said his car was not as good at the bottom but that he went down there to block Stewart. In the half a lap before he lost the lead, Kenseth went low in turns 3 and 4 and the car's handling went away. Stewart gained momentum, made a charge down the frontstretch and dived under Kenseth in turns 1 and 2 as Kenseth went into that corner high to the surprise of Stewart.
"I was prepared to go at least to the middle or to the top and run somewhere different because I knew I wasn't going to be able to follow him through there again,'' Stewart said. "And on the entry, he ran up high, and I was like "Wow, I can't believe he's giving me the bottom again. I got down there, got in the gas real quick and got by.''
Said Kenseth: "He just rolled right by me pretty much like I was tied to a tree,''
# Thank goodness for the final segment going back to 10 laps (from 25). There was not a pass for the lead on the track until the final segment started (that means they ran 90 laps without a pass on the track for the lead). Then chaos. The final 10 laps saved this event or else talk would have been about another boring all-star race. Not after those 10 laps.
# Joey Logano, who won the fan vote to get into the all-star race on what it was like out there: "I had a blast tonight. It was the most fun I've had in a Cup race so far, that's for sure. The last 10 laps were really cool. Everyone was going for the gusto out there. That was really cool.''
# On to the Jeremy Mayfield issue.
If Mayfield is found to be wrong about what NASCAR has told him about why he tested positive in his drug test, his career for all intents and purposes, will be over.
Mayfield said that NASCAR had not informed him what he tested positive for. Although NASCAR officials said that Mayfield was told 3 times about what the substance was.
If Mayfield is in the right, his voice needs to be heard. If he's wrong or deceiving everyone, he's in big trouble. NASCAR will punish him severley.
Here's what Mayfield said at the track.
You decide.

Independant Test for Mayfield
What Mayfield should have done when NASCAR suspended him, was immediately get an independant lab to give him another test. That would have been a test that he could have released to the public. It's too late now because too much time has passed to make the test believable.
It Took Six Days to Process the Test and Suspend Mayfield...
...which is fairly quick by the standards of most sports. NASCAR is probably spending a bit extra to get its results faster than other sports.
Floyd Landis's system was back to normal the day after he was caught doping to win the Tour de France. Why would a test six days after the fact hold any kind of relevance to Mayfield's situation? He was caught dirty at Darlington and that's that. The fact that his system might have cleaned out by the time he got to Charlotte is irrelevant.
I still wish NASCAR would release the substances involved. I believe their rules allows NASCAR to release the results at their discretion. It's obvious that Mayfield doesn't think he needs any of the benefits that secrecy could provide.
Correction on Test Timing
Oops. He was dirty in Richmond with his suspension announced in Darlington. That's what you get when he continues to run his mouth through the Charlotte weekend.
Mayfield
Dustin,
When a person submits to a drug test they can receive a written report of the test. NASCAR's states they will not release Mayfield's test results for his protection. NASCAR and the lab will only tell him verbally of his test results. Why can't they give him a written statement of his test findings? Are they really protecting Mayfield or is NASCAR protecting itself.

I,agee with you to a point about Busch.
I, think he is still mad at MR.H for letting him go. I,dont care for him at all. On the other hand,I thinks MR.H did Casey wrong.
I'm diehard Jimmie/if you can kinda look at it the other way,as I've looked at yours.
You Decide-All-Star
Dustin,
Not sure how Meyfield's comment was in rsponse to your article.
In a polite/response~~~Kyle should have walked away from the reporters, head held low. If he had ~~~~~~~~~~he would have been right there in front of any reporter.
The way Jimmie was done, did he walk away from the reporters? NO
The way Jeff was done,ya he was mad when they pulled the window down. Wouldnt you be? Did Jeff walk away from the reporters, dont think so.
First time I was glad to see Smoke win.
Being nice Dustin
Jeremy, Go Away Quietly While You Still Can
Isn't Mayfield the NASCAR leader in burnt bridges? Upon leaving both Penske and Evernham, his actions and statements that seemed incredibly irrational at the time. I don't want to claim that I was cynical enough to see this coming in advance, but Mayfield getting caught for drugs explains a lot about those past situations.
NASCAR should go ahead and name the actual drugs in public and be done with this goof. They should also solidify their penalty structure for drug offenses. Matching the Olympic penalties (1st offense 2 years, 2nd offense 4 years, and 3rd offense forever) makes more sense than penalties that can expire or be cancelled on a whim of the Frances, or based on the kind of rehab success that Shane Hmeil demonstrated.
Busch
Dcree you can comment on Busch. Just keep them clean. Remember, family newspaper/web site.
Dustin/ Busch
Dustin,
I promise I will not-comment on Busch anymore!
As I've told you in private emails how & why I respect your posts.
Waiting for you next post.
Could you maybe write something about Jeff with his update on his back?
I am Hendricks but you might find it interesting. Gives everyone a whole new attitude along with respect for Jeff.
Kyle Busch not talking to press
I am a Kyle Busch fan and I have no problem with him not talking to the press when he doesn't do well in a race. He is a fierce competitor and has a pretty low tolerance for stupidity. My take on him avoiding the press when he doesn't do well in a race is he is avoiding stupidity. I've listened to the questions he is asked and no offense Dustin but he gets asked some of the most bonehead questions or they are just intentionally trying to bait him to provoke a response they can run with. Kyle has matured considerably since coming to Joe Gibbs Racing watch his interview after the truck race for evidence of that. That's my less than 750 character take on the issue. :)
