A 'Wicked' good time at the Chrysler
So I splurged on some tickets to see Broadway's "Wicked" last night at the Chrysler, and it was AMAZING. If you haven't bought tickets to see the show yet....get on it! (The box office may even have a “rush” sale price two hours before the show if you want last minute seats.)
You may have already heard a lot of buzz around this Tony Award-winning musical, but in case you haven’t I won’t spoil it for you. The story line centers around “what happened in Oz before Dorothy dropped in.” It’s a different perspective of the classic Wizard of Oz tale and based off the best-selling novel by Gregory Maguire.
The musical is entertaining from start to finish, there weren’t any lulls or boring songs – it’s quick enough to keep the younger kids and tweens in the audience engaged.
The vocals of the lead actresses who played the two witches, Glinda (the Good Witch) and Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West), were ridiculously good - and effortless. My favorite songs by far were “Popular” and “Defying Gravity” but the whole score was chock full of great music and lyrics.
In addition to solid vocal performances, which you would expect from a Broadway cast, the actors delivered in the acting department as well. The lead actress who played Glinda, or "Ga-linda" if you will, could be cast as Elle in “Legally Blonde: The Musical” she played a ditzy blonde so well. Glinda was my favorite character as she traveled around in a bubble complete with a bubble machine and made-up words as she spoke (without realizing.)
Probably the best line of the whole night was when Glinda criticized Elphaba for still riding around on her broomstick and Elphaba fired back: "Not everyone gets to travel by bubble!"
The costumes were quirky, whimsical and quite Oz - asymetric lines, bright lime greens, imaginative hairstyles and guys donning dresses!
Needless to say, the wait to see this consistently sold-out show was well worth the wait.
