Beach OKs higher costs for dredging of Lynnhaven river

VIRGINIA BEACH

The engineering and surveying costs of dredging the western branch of the Lynnhaven River have increased almost 70 percent, to $407,209.

The higher costs are because the location of the transfer station changed. But the additional money won't increase the overall cost of the project, which is budgeted for $3.4 million, said Dave Hansen, a deputy city manager.

City Council members unanimously approved the cost changes Tuesday.

City officials have designated a site off Thalia Road, between Thalia Elementary School and Virginia Beach Boulevard, as the dredge spoils transfer station.

Officials struggled to find a place where dredge waste could be moved from the boat to trucks and then hauled to a borrow pit. City staff had originally recommended the Lynnhaven Boat Ramp, but nearby residents and boaters were opposed to that site because of concern over truck traffic.

Beach officials then eyed a shopping center off Virginia Beach Boulevard, near Town Center, which drew criticism from business owners who claimed they were being pushed out.

Good News.

This is a lot better than having all those dump trucks going down Shore Drive. Also it would cost a lot more than $400,000 if one of the loaded barges were to hit Lesner Bridge. Thanks Lee Shuler.
