Waggin' Tails

Wondering what you can do with your dog in Hampton Roads? Get the answers here. I'll be discussing dog care, nutrition, training, play, and games to play with your dog.

Pet owners should be well informed when it comes to caring for their pet. Recalls on food ingredients, brand name foods, and toys make it necessary for pet parents to have information. But there is so much information it would make your head spin. Angie has a knack for getting and sorting this information. Having run two pet related businesses and having rescued two dogs so far, she has years of experience in pet care and training. Beagle Needs A Home

I got a message yesterday from Beagles To The Rescue. They need a temporary foster home for one of their dogs.

They’re looking for a temporary home for a beagle from now until July 11th or 12th. The dog comes with a crate if you need one. Call Rita at 204-4411 if you can help.

I also got some news recently about the Mutt Strut. I was able to go last year and it was really fun. This year they have something special lined up. It’s going to be at Sleepy Hole Park on September 20 from 1 to 5. As usual, they’re going to have police and bomb dog demonstrations, agility demonstrations, canine games and contests, raffles, prizes, food, exhibitors, a rabies clinic, a vet corner, and people from rescue groups and shelters. And they’ll have a walkathon to raise funds for the animals in the shelter. That’s enough to wear you and your dog out for a couple days.

This year the Purina Incredible Dog Team will be there. The team is made up of some of the world’s most athletic canines who do acrobatic flying disc routines set to music. If you’ve seen them on TV, you know how good they are. These dogs do some amazing things while chasing a disc. The team members know how incredible every dog can be. A lot of the canine team members were adopted from shelters and rescue groups around the country. The team will be out there entertaining and educating people about pet care. If you want to register for the walkathon, the fee is $15 and you get a fundraising packet, a t-shirt, and a doggie bag. Go to www.suffolkhumanesociety.com and look for the Mutt Strut logo. It’s free to attend and open to the public.

I got this email yesterday called The Truth About Pets. I don’t know who wrote it or which website it came from. I thought it was really cute and wanted to share it with you. If you know who wrote it, let me know so I can give them credit for it.

The Truth About Pets

If I didn't have a dog or cat:

I could walk around my yard barefoot safely.

My house could be carpeted instead of tiled and laminated everywhere.

All flat surfaces, clothing, furniture, wall hangings and cars would be free of hair.

When the doorbell rings, it wouldn't sound like an unsupervised kennel.

When the doorbell rings, I could get to the door without wading through fuzzy bodies who beat me there.

I could sit on the couch and my bed the way I wanted to, without taking into consideration how much space several fur bodies would need to get comfortable.

I would have money and be free of guilt to go on a real vacation.

I would not be on a first-name basis with 6 veterinarians, as I put their yet unborn grandkids through college.

The most used words in my vocabulary would not be:  out, sit, down, come, no, stay, and leave him/her/it alone.

My house would not be cordoned off into zones with baby gates or other types of barriers.

I would not talk baby talk such as “Eat your din din now” or “Oh, so yummy for the tummy.”

My house would not look like a day care center, with toys everywhere underfoot.

My pockets would not contain things like poop bags, treats and an extra leash.

I would no longer have to spell the words ball, Frisbee, walk, treat, bike, go, or ride.

I would not have as many leaves inside my house as there are outside.

I would not look strangely at people who think having one dog/cat ties them down too much.

I'd look forward to spring and the rainy season instead of dreading 'mud' season.

I would not have to answer the question “Why do you have so many animals?” from people who have never had the joy of knowing they are loved unconditionally by someone as close to an angel as they will ever get.

How empty my life would be!

“Until one has loved an animal, part of their soul remains unawakened.”

Well, that’s it for today. Just think: only 3 more days until the holiday.
