The body of a woman missing in the Currituck Sound since late Saturday was found around 11 a.m. Monday morning by a commercial fisherman, said Sandy Casey, chief deputy for the Currituck County Sheriff’s Department.

Leah Kathleen Bland, 26, of Greenville, N.C., went missing about 8:30 p.m. Saturday after she and another woman in a boat had gone swimming near the area of Poplar Branch.

One woman survived by swimming for about an hour before calling 911. A search for Bland’s body continued through Sunday and into Monday. A commercial fisherman found her north of the search area, Casey said.

The women had gone swimming without anchoring their boat as a northeast wind blew. When the boat drifted away, the women attempted to swim toward it. The surviving woman lost sight of Bland. Alcohol was a factor, Coast Guard authorities said earlier in the search.

The women had launched from a private dock in Aydlett, north of Poplar Branch, Casey said. Jeff Hampton (252) 338-0159, jeff.hampton@pilotonline.com
