Bon Secours plan shifts transcribers to new firm

Posted to: News

Bon Secours Hampton Roads has asked 21 employees who transcribe medical information at DePaul Medical Center and Maryview Medical Center to switch companies to Webmedx, an Atlanta-based company.

Lynne Zultanky, public spokeswoman for Bon Secours Hampton Roads, said the pay and compensation will remain the same.

However, at least one employee, Margaret Litka, said the medical transcript employees are upset about the change.

The 67-year-old Virginia Beach woman said company representatives said her income would be the same for a month but then would switch to a rate tied to the number of lines transcribed. She said her pay would be less at that point.

Litka also said the new company would require the employees to work from home instead of at the hospital.

The employees were informed Thursday, and they will no longer be employed by Bon Secours as of July 18. Webmedx provides medical documentation services to hospitals and clinics across the country.

Zultanky said the move is expected to shorten the amount of time it takes to provide patient information to health care providers.

She said Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News has been using the company for seven years.
