The attorney for former Green Run High star Plaxico Burress is trying to work out a deal that would allow his client to play in the NFL this season, ESPN reported on its Web site Friday.
The network, citing a source with knowledge of the case, said attorney Benjamin Brafman is trying to reach a plea deal with minimal jail time or postpone a trial until after the 2009 season.
Burress faces a June 15 hearing in Manhattan on two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a loaded and unlicensed weapon. He was charged after accident shooting himself in the leg at a Manhattan nightclub on Nov. 29.
If convicted, Burress faces a mandatory minimum jail sentence of 3-1/2 years.
According to ESPN's sources, negotiations have been hung up on Burress' reluctance to accept any deal that includes jail time. The judge would have to approve any deal.
NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said on Friday that in the event of a trial postponement, commissioner Roger Goodell has not decided whether he would allow Burress to play.
Burress was released by the New York Giants in April.
The New York Post reported that the New York Jets, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Chicago Bears have expressed interest in signing Burress if he is available.
