An assistant principal at Western Branch High School was arrested Friday night and charged with driving under the influence after a three-car accident she was involved in sent two people to the hospital.

Deana Otwell, a 47-year-old Suffolk resident, got into an accident at about 9:30 p.m. at the intersection of Taylor Road and Dunedin Drive, said Chesapeake police spokeswoman Detective Christi Golden. Police were called to the scene, and Otwell was arrested and taken to Chesapeake City Jail. The drivers of the other two vehicles were taken the hospital with minor injuries.

Golden said she did not have further details on how the accident took place Sunday.

Western Branch’s graduation ceremony had taken place earlier that afternoon. Otwell is the assistant principal for instruction at the school.

Court records show Otwell previously pleaded guilty to a 2005 DUI.
